Thoughts on sending in vintage cards and getting lower grade from more reputable co.
New to collecting and new to this community.
I just wanted to get the thoughts and opinions from this community. If you have a low graded vintage card from SGC (grade 1 or 2), would you crack it open and send it in to PSA, knowing that it will get a lower grade? It seems like collectors will pay more for slabs in PSA compared to other grading companies. Cards that I am contemplating doing that to, are for my personal collection. Collection will eventually go to my children and they will probably sell them. An example would be an SGC graded 1, 1909-11 T206 Cy Young. Thank you for your opinion. |
I was just talking about this in a video I'm trying to finish, so here are my thoughts...
1062. Law of Diminishing Diminishments In layman’s terms, the lower you go down the number grade scale, the less disparity will be found between the sold prices of cards in PSA holders versus those housed in other slabs. |

I prefer SGC for cards in my personal collection. The black apron presents so much better for pre-war cards, and if the recent Ruth rookie abomination is any indication PSA still doesn't have a clue about presentation and esthetics with their holders. Every thread needs a card. - |

Reputable is a bit of a loaded word.
I suppose in some ways we could just go straight to reputation, rather than something more substantial. So maybe there's room to debate reputation, with market for their slabs being a reasonable proxy for reputation? Sadly, even the most reputable graders are far from infallible. And with the sheer mountain of stuff that they grade every day, there ends up being a lot more mistakes than their reputations might suggest. And now that PSA and SGC are owned by the same larger umbrella company, I guess we can debate whether their reputations are really that divisible. Or whether they should be divisible. |

not enough people are talking about this. SGC's inferior / inconsistent grading has been very PSA-like for the last 10 months. Jeez, i wonder why. |
I think some of us are in similar positions for thinking what happens after I am gone. IMO by the time some us go who know what value add will be the flavor of the day. I would not worry about spending money to try and enhance value for the future. Spend the money on more cards to give your kids.
Enjoy the cards however you have them and when if this is truly meant to be some form of inheritance have a few trusted people help your family figure out what is best then. |
I would like to thank all that posted a comment on this subject. I did not realized that both SGC and PSA are owned by the same parent company. That explains a lot. I like to evaluate situations by examining multiple side. Your comments gave me a different perspective that I had not considered. Thank you again.
