REA wins last night?

Would love to see what everyone here won on last night’s REA auction… the 2nd Morehouse Ruth did better than I expected at $336k. Had no basis to guess but figured less than that. Very happy with that outcome.

Live to see what others won…

Jeff

I struck out on 3 lots. Always next time :D

Blown out of the water on 1, and after a late night came up with this.

pawpawdiv9 04-28-2025 06:28 AM

Struck out on the “sport parade” Jackie
Fetched 10k- I consider it more pre-rook but would been a nice addition

Bicem 04-28-2025 07:25 AM

Thought I was taking home the 06 Pirates cabinet but someone really wanted it.

Won the Red Sox Ruth type 3 photo.

There was definitely a mix of strong prices and deals to be had, which is nice when it comes to REA. Personally, the latter instance happens extremely rarely.

Ended up with two of the wackier items:

Nice pickup, DJ. Congrats!

Hung in there on the Cracker Jack Branch Rickey card, but $3240 for one graded Poor with the top right corner missing was a bridge too far. I didn’t think it was worth my highest bid, but someone wanted it more than I did. I’ll stick to my comfort zone on CJ buying…it’s worked so far.
The Cracker Jack album sold for $1560, which was about right, although they are scare. Lots of deep pockets biding….far deeper than mine.

Some awesome pick ups everyone! I was lucky enough to pick up this nice, well loved, Jackie Robinson pinback pins lot.

dariushou 04-28-2025 08:53 AM

I had to bail out on the T214 Evers. I should have stayed in on the Cycle 460 Cobb - i think that went for a great price. I was able to walk away with some other t206 rare backs and some rare topps test issues which i'm happy with.

parkplace33 04-28-2025 09:24 AM

Some deals in REA IMO. Just looking over the final sales. I think someone got a deal on this 53 Mays

I went pretty hard on the Victoty Evers and Rose PC Plank but didn’t stay up late to duke it out. Unfortunately I had the budget set aside for those two and wasn’t able to go hard for a bunch of the small stuff I had on my list.

I did come away with a very cool side piece to the collection. Looking forward to putting this Piedmont Fan with the guys, once framed up. I love the display pieces to go with the collection as much as the collection itself.

Looking forward to seeing the rest of the haul from the board members,
Bob

I'm absolutely crushed. As many of you know, in addition to pre-war cards, I collect everything of Tom Seaver -- cards, books, magazines, posters, etc. As far as I know, I have every Seaver card that was issued to the public. But to me, the holy grail has always been the 1970 Topps Cloth Sticker, which was never publicly issued. I've been searching for this card for probably 40-45 years. REA had one last night (probably the only one in existence). I bid hard, but came up short as the underbidder. It went for well over $20K with the juice, and I had to give up. I guess I'll never own this card, which truly would have been the cherry on top of my Seaver collection.

I was also the underbidder on the Old Judge Pete Browning, and got blown away on the E107 McGraw. Tough night.

Sorry Paul. I was rooting for you. That would have been in good hands with you. Hopefully the lucky winner has your integrity as a collector.

Finally found this Grasso from the Briggs Meats set. Nice to check a difficult find off the list. Creeping my way to a full set, with 37/40 now in hand. Somebody (maybe around here) pushed me pretty hard, and I had to take down a much larger lot of 17 to get it, but those are the lengths we go to when the inducement is right.

Just missing:

Byne
Coan
Mantle

There was an interesting mixture of things I collect...especially cabinets and Diamond Stars. I think some of the Pifer & Becker cabinet prices were down from when the items were sold several years ago, as was the Ned Hanlon Tomlinson cabinet. I guess those were "deals" compared to previous prices.

The problem was that I was chasing Diamond Stars and by the time I realized my chase was futile (except for one card), it was too late to go back to the cabinets (or the very nice tintype someone got a good price on).

Some of the Diamond Stars were also down from the last reported VCP price...just not the one I won!

Agreed on super deep pockets in this auction. I placed ~150 bids at my ceiling price about a week ago and didn't budge. I won only 5 of the 150:

1895 N300 Mayo's Cut Plug Tommy Tucker SGC VG/EX 50 - https://bid.collectrea.com/lots/145111

1934 R304 Al Demaree Die-Cuts #15 Jack Hayes SGC VG 3 - https://bid.collectrea.com/lots/147164

1952 Topps #311 Mickey Mantle PSA VG-EX 4 - https://bid.collectrea.com/lots/145940

1954 Topps #128 Hank Aaron Rookie PSA VG+ 3.5 - https://bid.collectrea.com/lots/141368

1955 Topps #124 Harmon Killebrew Rookie SGC MINT+ 9.5 - 1 of 2 - Highest Graded!

I was extremely surprised to win the 52 Mantle (about 10-20% under market price and only $3k higher than an SGC 3 in the same auction (https://bid.collectrea.com/lots/146588)) and the 55 Topps Killebrew, as PSA 9s run for $20k-$26k

BioCRN 04-28-2025 11:56 AM

I had a win last night, but mainly I come to these threads to see what jerks were bidding against me.

Finally got an E107 Menefee...outbid on the barely-1-piece E107 jack taylor.

1907 Wolverine Sam Crawford. Nice condition and somewhat rare, I thought it went for a fair price last night. Been on my list a while, now I just need to add the Cobb which may take a bit longer.

I picked up the last 3 "Scrapps" st Louis Browns I needed (O'Neill, Comiskey, Robinson). Really happy about that!

Someone REALLY wanted the Old Mill Elberfeld that I was chasing.

Can't win 'em all!

I've been thinking the marketplace might heat up a little after the auction closed, particularly with anyone who came up emptyhanded suddenly feeling like they'd like to pick up some wins without having to fuss with the vicissitudes of the auction process.

Struck out on several.
Missed out on some of the other bottles but glad to add this one to the collection.
The hand held game is a duplicate but it's just so dang cool I don't mind owning another and cheaper than I paid for my first one.
The figural is actually a business card holder and similar but different than another one I have.
The game card supplement is down Leon's alley and unfortunately I'm missing the playing field but will keep my eyes open.

The lot by lot closing was fine but man oh man having to click on each individual lot to see that lot's countdown clock was stressful and absolutely unnecessary. Overall I like the website but that part of it absolutely needs changed. I was frantically clicking on about 14 different items in overtime to see how much time each lot had whereas I should have been able to just refresh my bid list to see all the clocks together.

That was a great piece. I missed it somehow, was too late to bid when i finally realized. Congrats.

perezfan 04-28-2025 06:46 PM

Great pickups, Michael. I agree the website needs tweaking, as it was lagging quite a bit last night.

I know many east-coasters like the individual lot closing, but I hate it. I was outbid at the closing on at least half a dozen lots, and when I tried to switch to something else, those lots had just closed. I wish they'd just keep the entire auction open like they used to. I bet many consignors left significant money on the table.

Also, I'm going to PM you on that Pirate Whisky Bottle. I have a shot glass with those exact etched graphics, that would nicely compliment your newly acquired Bottle.

Congrats on some awesome pickups, although it's a bit disappointing REA didn't know what that figural Business Card Holder was. They've sold a few in the past, and I have one!

-1 for me.

I suspect that plenty of us either give up or decline to participate in auctions that run all night until the wee hours of the next morning.

I guess we can debate whether the net effect is positive or negative on final bids. But personally, the all night approach is a real drag on my motivation to participate.

Yeah, I get it... And I'm sure most people are in your camp.

Did not mean for this to turn into yet another thread on auction closing formats. I know that's been done to death, and opinions are like a$$holes...everybody has one, and thy usually stink. ;)

I was just venting, as there were 4 or 5 lots I would've pursued, had they not closed mere seconds before I could make the switchover. My budget is finite, so I could not go all-in on everything that I was eyeing prior to the overtime.

Drove me insane along with the inability to easily see which lots I was winning. I finally gave up and went to sleep.

I hear you.

I guess there’s no perfect system that always works for everyone all the time.

I suspect this system works better for me largely because I’m typically only in on 2-3 lots at most in any one auction. I might put in placeholder bids on a half dozen or more, but by the time we get to extended bidding, I’m usually down to a very short list. So I’m rarely having to juggle multiple priorities and try to figure it out while the clock keeps running me down.

The problem for me was the website still showed me as top bidder on items that I had been outbid on. Also, I don’t like how the bid history doesn’t show which bids were yours. I found the whole thing frustrating.

molenick 04-29-2025 07:09 AM

Yeah, those were some issues I mentioned in the "catalogue has arrived" thread.

I suggested these improvements:
1) The ability to jump to a lot number
2) The ability to see more than 100 lots per page
3) The ability to jump to a page
4) When looking at Bid History, the ability to see which bid(s) were yours
5) My Total Winning Bids should be quicker to represent the up-to-date total. There was a delay of several minutes in registering any new high bids or new outbids.

The My Bid List page was accurate in saying whether you were High Bidder or Out Bid (at least for me).

Although what I did was keep several tabs open in order to see the countdown clock for each item I was still actively bidding on.

GoCubsGo32 04-29-2025 04:24 PM

I struck out on the Mel Ott and Hank Greenberg auto snapshots photos.

This was my first time using the new auction platform during an auction.

I had a hard time telling if I was the high bidder on specific lots.

Under the "My Total winning bid" followed by a $ amount. It was bugging out or taking awhile to reflect. If I bid say $500. got outbid, it was taking awhile to go back to $0. So it was at times confusing whether I needed to bid again or not.

Congrats to winners! Awesome stuff!
