Gehrig Ruppert and McCarthy Team Issue? Questions
2 Attachment(s)
Hi-
I have had this photo for a long time. It shows Gehrig, Ruppert, and McCarthy and has their last names and the number 26 on the back. Is this a Yankees team issue? I seem to remember other photos of a similar size and composition (this measures 4X5 inches). Does anyone know when this was issued? Any other information about the photo or others like it would be greatly appreciated. Alan |
I don't have much to add in terms of saying if these were an issue. I can say I have seen probably 10 different copies of varying sizes.
If I had to guess somebody made copies with the original negative. Probably sometime in the following decades maybe 50s-70s. |
It's a really nice photo. I've seen it before over the years. If I had to guess, I would say the location is spring training at St. Petersburg. McCarthy thought an awful lot of Lou Gehrig, beyond the ball field. The Colonel passed away in 1939, and he looks to be in good health here, so obviously prior to 39.

Thank you both! I really appreciate your thoughts on this.

Yankee photos
Thorne was the Florida photographer for the Yankees from about 1927 thru 1941. This was when they trained in St Pete until the war changed spring training sites.
Wm Greene shot the springtime Yanks starting in the 1940s. The Thorne photos I own are all 8x10s. he would stamp his name on the reverse. I see images like yours with the printed name of the player on the back and of contact print size I'm sure these are Thorne photos. Thorne also shot the Braves when they trained in St. Pete. |
Thank you Michael! It is great to know the photographer. I really appreciate the information.
