1952 bowman question

Was wondering if someone could direct me to a list of horizontal 1952 Bowmans. Would like to collect the set and hope to start with the horizontal cards. Surely someone has already compiled a list? Thank you!

Just looking at the photos on this site: https://www.tcdb.com/Checklist.cfm/sid/25/1952-Bowman, the following appear to be horizontals:

9 - Vern Stephens
20 - Willie Jones
41 - Chico Carrasquel
49 - Jim Hearn
50 - Gerry Staley
51 - Gil Coan
63 - Irv Noren
69 - Joe Adcock
107 - Del Rice
139 - Jerry Priddy
166 - Bobby Adams
174 - Mickey Grasso
180 - Ed Fitzgerald
197 - Charlie Silvera

14 total if I counted correctly.

Hey Travis, based on your post count, looks like you are new to Net 54. Welcome!

1952 Bowman is my FAVORITE set. I completed mine in mostly raw EX condition a couple years ago (I bought graded for the higher dollar cards). Still enjoy looking through it.

What are your parameters? Raw vs Graded? Rough (collector) grade vs mint?

That's a fun idea to start with the horizontals...there are some good ones.

This Edward Fitzgerald is my favorite "common" in the set. Such cool artwork!

Under-appreciated set that was the first I collected as a kid in 1952. Always recalled the Joe Adcock card because I was puzzled by the letters on the sign, since at the age of eight, I knew nothing about FCC callsigns. I asked my older brother and he was no help, so went to the old man and, after studying it for a minute, he told me it was the brand of our huge console television.

Yeah, that Adcock card also has a really cool design. The backgrounds on some of those early Bowman cards are just as interesting as the players sometimes.

In looking at the horizontal numbers listed above, it looks like none of the cards with numbers higher than 197 were horizontal....so there aren't any in the shorter printed "high numbers". I wonder if there was a reason behind that?

Photo selection...?

The number of horizontal cards differed greatly on all seven printing sheets. The second series of 36 had the most, third series had just one, etc.. Seems to me that the choice of horizontal format simply depended on the player's pose in whatever photo the line-drawing artist had to work with. If the artist had only one photo and the player was a catcher, or was posed in full swing or with arms spread out, his card was a likely horizontal. On the other hand, if the artist had only an ordinary portrait shot, no choice but vertical. For the seventh and last sheet, photo options were probably pretty limited, so all vertical.
