What did you win in LOTG?
1 Attachment(s)
Congrats, Al - lots of fantastic cards and other stuff in your LOTG auction that ended in the WEE, WEE hours of this morning (sorry, Al, but the ONLY thing I don't like about your auctions in the closing method!).
Although it did cost me a good bit more than I was hoping it would, I did win my gotta-have item, this 1921 White's Tip Top Bread card of Wade Lefler. As some/many of you are aware (because I mention this so often), I am a passionate collector of cards of all the players who were on the 1924 Washington Senators WS Championship team. Lefler was acquired by the Senators from a minor league team in early September 1924, and his bat helped the team during its stretch run to the AL Pennant. I believe this very scarce card is the only card issued of Lefler during his playing days. |
I picked up the Almendares Premium w/Buck O'Neil for what I felt was a great price. His scarce card issues have exploded since his induction, so I was very surprised there wasn't even a final day bid challenge on this great image.

I was happy to pick this Ruth up, thought it was a nice looking 4

Beautiful Ruth! My favorite of the 4 Goudeys.
Here's my lone pickup. IMHO, one of the more beautiful cards ever made, and an underrated HOFer to boot... https://bid.loveofthegameauctions.co...e?itemid=40605 |

Lefler went on to become a lawyer with his own practice. |

Some great pick ups from all! Here were my two wins to help out with some of my collection spaces. A full Boston Sunday Herald Full Panel w/Tris Speaker for my player PC. Also, picked up this sweet early Joe D snapshot for my photo collection.

Ditto Lucas & Doug on the Dodgers snapshots. Strong prices...but oh man they were awesome! I struck out on all those lots.
^^Sweet Gil snapshot Lucas! |
I went 0-for in this one! Some really great stuff, as always.
Val - that 1921 Tip Top is amazing!!! And Brownie, I was one of the underbidders on that super rare Speaker rookie Supplement. Nice snag on that one! That Minoso piece looks familiar. I think that was once mine. Small world. |

1918 NY Giants Type I Photo- Spring Training Marlin, Texas
3 Attachment(s)
I have been looking for a Type I photo of the Giants at Spring Training in Marlin Springs, Texas for quite some time. Winning this one checks that box and one other . I love collecting various styles of images of cardigan sweaters of teams I collect. ( I also, over the years, was lucky enough to buy 3 Mitchell-Ness and 3 EFF reproduction cardigans.) In this one, some sweaters have the “NY” and some don’t, also 1918 was near the end of the era of cardigan use. Having Holt, Demaree, Sellee and other usual suspects is an added bonus. This one will find a space on the wall.
One thing I did notice, no one bid on this after me for the duration of the auction which I was happy with , but did find strange. I know there is a thread on here about the stock market , maybe people did not bid as high or as aggressively as the last REA auction because of the economy…..don’t know, be interesting to see what other auctions do. Oh well, glad to add this piece to the collection. |
Some beautiful pieces posted here. Great auction!

I bid on the T206 Sam Crawford American Beauty SGC card but it went a much higher than even my bidding when I dropped out in OT.
https://bid.loveofthegameauctions.co...e?itemid=40744 Had another Crawford "toughie" - that as a 1916 Holmes To Homes bread. One of the few I don't have from this pose...but a strong price for one with back damage. https://bid.loveofthegameauctions.co...e?itemid=40357 Both are Rare cards! |
The Jackie Robinson debut photo was incredible, know I'll regret not trying harder to win it. What a piece of history.

Congrats Al C. on the great auction. Quite a few nice items. I was surprised at the final hammer on the 1963 Topps Plaque Mickey Mantle with Wrapper ($4,920). However, I have not seen one that nice...so maybe not real surprised after all

Some great items in the auction.
I really wanted the photo of Jackie's 1st at-bat, but was quickly priced out on it. The 1947 snapshots from the Dodgers' 1947 Spring Training in Cuba were (in my eyes) extremely historic. I did not end up winning the auction, but found it really intriguing. Spring Training in Cuba was done to protect Jackie Robinson and the black players who were there. (Jackie and Campanella were both on the Montreal Royals at the time, which I assume is why they did not make the photos. I won one item. The lineup card is from Hank Aaron's final game on the Braves. It was also his final HR on the Braves and established the record for most homeruns by a player on a single team at 733. This was the copy of Braves manager Clyde King and as per the listing, comes from his personal collection |

Pick-ups in two sets I have barely ever even seen before (except at McKee's table :)).
The vitality in those Hall photos is uncanny - |
I struck out completely. I "had to" have the Felices Don Newcombe. I thought I was bidding real strong on this card, which had a minimum bid of only $50. I was wrong. It sold for over $2,500 with the premium.

There were some sweet M101-4/5 rare backs. Got this Otto Miller Block and Kuhl. This set is awesome for back collectors. Much rarer and cheaper than T206 rare backs.
