Maple Crispettes - A 1923 or 1925 Issue?
 

I always knew this Canadian baseball issue to be a 1923 set but just noticed on eBay tonight, a PSA graded example with a 1925 date on it. Has research in more recent times discovered this to be a 1925 issue or is the baseball series being confused with the hockey cards of the same era, which I believe are 1924-25?

Thanks for sharing that info, Bradley. So that means that the Jim Bottomley rookie card from that set, one of his two 1923 issues along with the 23-24 Exhibits card, would no longer be a rookie card option. Thus, the Exhibit would be Bottomley’s only true rookie card.

One thing that’s almost as certain as death and taxes is that whenever a long-time believed to be issue date of a vintage baseball card set is changed due to further research, it always ends up being a date later than originally catalogued as opposed to earlier. Anyone know of an instance where that isn’t true?

When you play the rookie card game, these changes can be huge. Ie- Novelty Cutlery Postcards, Big Head Strip Cards, William Patersons, Felix Mendelsohns, etc.

Great observations. I was talking with some hobbyists yesterday about rookie cards. I think they are a big niche but the popularity might have gone down, a little bit in our space, over the last 3-4 yrs. That's only an extemporanious thought though. Or maybe, it's only me that doesn't look at them as much? I am sure I still have a few in my collection. Who hasn't collected them at one time or another...?

A few cards. These were from my last collection, as a reference for the thread subject. Great research on that too. I am going to have to go upstairs and get that edition of OldCardboard and read the article again. (edited - I just skimmed over the article. Will read more later. Fantastic!)
