1992 Topps Pre-Production

Does anyone know how these 1992 pre-production sheets were available? Other years include pre-production cards in the previous year's factory set. These can be found in both the gold version, seen here, and the plain version.

Any information on origin/availability in 1991-1992 would be helpful.

Im pretty sure that I read some years back that they were distributed at a card show. I'll see what I can dig up from the "library" of old hobby magazines I keep.

I have both sheets that I keep with my corresponding sets but pretty sure I bought both on Ebay.

The 2011 Standard Catalog does list them and says they were distributed to dealers. On those for the regular set the card numbers on the back do not match the cards in the set and 91 stats are not included. The gold sheet back numbers do match to the cards in the 92 set but also lack 91 stats

Appreciate the help, guys!

New wrinkle - the regular and gold sheets all have 1991 stats and card numbers match the regular sets. I was initially confuse by your comments about stats and card numbers, but then I realized TCDB lists 9 pre-production cards which don't seem to have been issued in sheet form, lack 1991 stats and and have non-corresponding card numbers. Player selection also differs partly from the sheets. See the Nixon here. Also, the diamond on the back is oval on these samples.

If the sheets were given away at shows, does anyone know how these oval-backed cards were distributed? Obviously it was well in advance of the set's production as the final reverse design hadn't been set and 1991 stats weren't available yet.

I have nothing to offer but felt it was worth noting that these used to be offered for sale fairly frequently in the 2000s but are hardly seen anymore.

I'm wondering if they were possibly issued as media/dealer order form inserts.
