Looking for help with 1888 Glass Negative ID.......
 

Vermont still has some treasures in it's old farmhouses!

This is one item I obtained today that I can't identify.

2 3/4 width x 3 1/2 tall with chipped rough edges. Frame is 3 1/2" x 4 1/4".

Came in vintage frame with a white piece of paper behind the glass negative to make it stand out.

Took a chance and took it out of frame to see if it had any markings and it did.

Clear as day in the glass it says "1888. Co. N.Y." The reason you can't see the "1888 Co. NY" in the first photo is because the white paper that is behind the glass negative makes the white printing invisible until you remove it from the frame.

I'm assuming Goodwin but not sure why the Goodwin was left out?

Any thoughts or opinions are welcomed!

That is way cool! Wow.

It is very nice. However, it is not a negative. It is a positive image. If it was a negative the tones would be reversed. The hat and other white areas would be dark and vice versa. I suspect this was cut down as the "Co. NY" probably had a company name in front of it. Whomever owned or took the negative.

That is not a negative--it is a print on glass. A negative has black where white is in the image and this does not. Oops, I see Michael already pointed this out.

It is possible this was a magic lantern slide. I pulled out a few of mine to check the dimensions. They measure 4 x 3¼ and the image area is about 2½ x 3½. that is fairly close to the measurements of your item.

There were a bunch of these Goodwin images floating around here a while back. “Vermont Find”. I had a look at some, even bought one. I think the guy that had them eventually brought them up to Maine and many were sold in the Saco River Auctions. Great images, but tough to put a date on.
