Wait ... Ted Williams sold CONDOMS???

This listing in the current Love of the Game auction is incredible — "Sold for the Prevention of Disease" in 1950. What an endorsement deal! LINK: https://bid.loveofthegameauctions.co...e?itemid=39441. This is one of the best oddball item auctions I've seen, along with a fantastic selection of 1800s/pre-war.

Al C.risafulli 03-21-2025 08:55 AM

Ha!

Ted was on record as saying that he did not endorse these, and that they used his image without his permission. Apparently he enjoyed the idea, though, and there are a few autographed packages floating around out there...

Aquarian Sports Cards 03-21-2025 09:15 AM

I've seen individuals before, but never the four pack.

D. Bergin 03-21-2025 09:23 AM

I don't think I've ever seen the term "1/4 Dozen" before. :D

brianp-beme 03-21-2025 09:35 AM

A real 'Champ' would easily use a 1/4 dozen of these during a disease free session.

Brian

toledo_mudhen 03-21-2025 09:42 AM

So both Honus & Ted did not approve the use of their images on Stuff......

I'm thinkin a "real champ" would go thru a quarter dozen in just about 1 week??

Al C.risafulli 03-21-2025 09:43 AM

Just in case you missed this one:

48 packs! Three condoms per pack. We call this one the "Wishful Thinking" box...

With 1950s U.S. production standards, I'd say those things are good to go today!

Tremendous auction, Al. What an amazing assortment across 1,250 lots.

So then I guess we can assume that they weren't custom tailored for Ted himself.

Perhaps because he enjoyed the product?

As the lothario saying goes - "Don't spend it all in one place".

Amazing to me how much traction threads like these get.

It kinda makes sense Ted would appear on this product. The Boston media and fans always thought he was a pri..

OK, I'll show myself out. :D

You also made reference to a Rush lyric in an auction. Nice Easter Egg for Geddy Lee.

Damn, you're right. I'm not so good at this math stuff. That's a lot of quarter dozens.

...and yes, according to the Boston media, Teddy Ballgame did carry himself as if he thought he was the cock of the walk.

:D

Very cool item! I’m thinking of it..
Al acquires some great pieces in his travels…

Ted has some great “pieces” including his preserved Head….

Second greatest player ever….

Funny - similar image they use for the 1950s matches with the little box!

If Teddy was still with us, today he'd be hawking Depends.

As a member of a democratic nation you are free to choose to use one of those old packs of condoms or the below box of matches. Either way, you will be playing with fire.

Ted's head has reiterated, perhaps for legal reasons, that the use of his image in both instances was not authorized.
