March Pickup Thread

(Don't want to be 'that guy' saying it, but...) Have we really reached the 7th of the month without a new pickups thread yet???

Grabbed a trio of graded Green Tints (with qualifiers) at a cheap price. Two have no mention of it on the labels, but PSA was always way behind in labeling the variations (or just plainly missed them), so it's no bother.

The Demeter is cool, because he's a low POPer.
There are only a total of six GT 9s listed, and only six total non-GT 9s listed (two of them - including the one shown here, even though it is a GT - having qualifiers).
So basically, it's a one of seven (assuming six actual GT PSA 9s, plus this one) card.
(And if I may...having a PD qualifier on a card from a printing effort made up entirely of print defects, is it a bit laughable. Ha!!) :D

Just love these things!!

Added a nice Frank Robinson rookie card recently. 1957 Topps design never did much for me, but it's growing on me!

Don’t normally post in this thread, but have grabbed a few of my pre junk wax and junk wax cards recently. Trying to put together 1992 Donruss Elite set (must have opened 100 boxes as kid and never pulled one). Picked this up from Howard Chasser yesterday.

Finally have a pick up. Not doing much lately

jchcollins 03-12-2025 08:44 AM

Random recent acquisitions that I don’t believe I’ve shown yet…

Nice GT’s Jolly. I’m guessing they are older slabs if they don’t say that on the flip? I have one graded one, and it does say green tint… However I would have no faith in PSA to actually know the difference.

Finally was able to grab a 58 Hires Henry (Hank) Aaron with tab. This may be my last pickup from the 1950’s without some luck (need the 52 Indianapolis Clowns, 53-55 Spic and Span, 55-60 Bill and Bob PC and the 59 Dad’s Cookies). :)

jchcollins 03-13-2025 12:24 PM

Lurking in the recesses of my memory for a few months now - was the knowledge that this card was under glass just about 2 miles away from my house down at the LCS.

Today, the card finally won the battle against my head, and I went down and struck a deal for it.

For my collecting dollar, this is a pretty nice 1. Wrinkles, sure - but they don’t violate the main image or break the color. Very happy!

That's fantastic.

That card (not necessarily one with the tab) was high on my list 5 or more years ago, but I never made it happen - and since then of course the price has taken off. But very nice, beautiful card. Congrats!

Thank you sir. Nice pickups yourself. :)

Yes, some of these cards have come back to 2022 levels but nowhere near 2019-2020 prices. Hope for your sake prices continue to come in a bit.

Very nice Mathews pickups. Grabbed some new ones myself this month (en route).

I believe these were printed much later than the image, but I saw this pre-rookie image RPPC of Frank Robinson for cheap and couldn't say no.

I was able to add/upgrade a few cards for my 1952 Bowman set over the weekend.

NC local show at an elementary school off the beaten path. I'm going to guess 100 tables, less than a quarter of it was vintage. I will admit to being turned off by obviously overpriced stuff: One very OC '55 Topps Jackie Robinson in an SGC 2.5 was stickered at roughtly 2x recent sales. Another guy had fairly nice lower grade slabs (PSA 2 and 3) of some early 60's Mantles I wouldn't have minded picking up. When he came down to his "best" price - he was still in the neighborhood of $100 or so high on each card compared to recent sales. I guess my poker face wasn't too great and he inquired - so I politely told him he was high and what I thought a reasonable price would have been. I then got treated to some kind of convoluted explanation "Hey, I have to pay retail too and then I have to make a profit..." Uh, what? So I should pay you a retail price PLUS a premium for coming to the show? No thanks. I don't care that the cards were nicely centered for the grade; if I pay you a 4 price for a card in a 2 or 3 slab, I may like the card still - but I'm going to go home unhappy with the price I paid and a bad taste in my mouth. As I've done this before, I am not making the same mistake again...

I digress. I was able to find the cards below that I thought were priced accordingly with dealers who were willing to negotiate for sales and not there just to run a museum. The Killebrew has some kind of bend or line over the top of his cap, but otherwise is a very nicely centered and colored 3. The Robinson doesn't look nearly that bad in person; my amateur photography skills just captured all the snow in full reflection. That one is wearing a wrinkle, but the price was right. It turned out to be a decent day after all - it's rare that I get to pickup HOF rookie cards that I've never owned before - in any grade.

Nice Killebrew John.

I too went to a local card show today. Room was packed, decent amount of vintage, some priced fair, some way overpriced. I guess a typical show. A couple dealers said sales were good.

I did end up with a card that I was not actively pursuing, but it was on my radar. Couldn't pass it up.

Very nice. I saw one of those at my show too, but it was overpriced. That card currently falls high on my list of "Why don't I have this yet?" cards. I have the '75 Yount, and I have a graded version of the '75 Brett mini - but don't currently have a copy of the regular sized card.

DeanH3 03-24-2025 04:17 PM

Thanks John. Dealer had it priced at $150 but we settled on $125. Couldn't be happier with the eye appeal.

Kutcher55 03-25-2025 02:44 PM

Love the minis and that is one very nice '5'.

68 Gibby is such a great card. Looks like a guy who won't allow much more than one earned run per game.

I haven’t purchased a card for a long time as I prefer memorabilia. Lately Im getting old and becoming aware of my mortality. I decided to start grading some cards from my childhood collection so my family could maximize the value of my collection when I’m gone. I’ve had these cards for 40+ years so technically they can’t be classified as pickups but they have been entombed for the first time.

A set I'll never complete (due to a combination of finances and eventual death), but whoop-de-doo I'm getting pretty close to the halfway mark with this (often added to the discussion of being a) possible future Hall of Famer...

1967 Topps Baseball Poster of Ron Santo + 69 Mantle

Steven Kuhlman was kind enough to send me this poster in the spirit of helping a fellow collector. I am piecing some of the insert sets together slowly, but I will complete them eventually.

One other acquisition was a 1969 Topps Mantle #500. I only need the Nolan Ryan to complete that set and I will have finished the regular sets from my youth before I began going to shows in late 1975. The only other sets I would eventually acquire would be the 1964 Topps Giant Cards and the 1972 All Time Greats 3-D set.

Sets I am still working on:

1967 Topps Baseball Posters
1968 Topps Game Cards
1969 Topps Baseball Stamp Album- Twins
1970 & 1971 Topps Scratch Offs
1971 Topps Baseball Coins

Happy collecting!
