What caused marks on back of Leaf Musial???

Attached is the back of a '48-'49 Leaf Musial. Any insight on what caused the marks on the back? Thanks for your thoughts!

Looks like what happens when you are writing with a pen and accidentally put your hand on the part you wrote a few seconds before. So that would be my guess. Some sort of ink mishap.

It could be transfer from a scrapbook that didn't come out in the soak, or it could be "wet sheet transfer" when it was stacked on top of another sheet at the printer's before the ink was dry.
