Gene Hackman

What a tremendous actor. "Hoosiers" remains my favorite movie and, indeed, gets my vote as the best sports movie of all time. RIP.

D. Bergin 02-27-2025 07:56 AM

One of the best. Didn't realize he had already been "retired" for quite awhile now.

Same for me. I never tire of watching it. Or The French Connection for that matter. What a talent. RIP

Agree with all. Try “The Gypsy Moths” from 1969, or “The Conversation”. RIP. Trent King

RIP Lex Luthor

Never saw a movie of his that I did not like.

Not the most mentioned, but every time I hear his name my first thought is usually Bat21.

Beercan collector 02-27-2025 04:44 PM

I thought he was great in The Unforgiven - Been awhile since I’ve seen it but I remember him playing an Ill-equipped sheriff that made some bad decisions desperately trying to keep the peace .. Of course the film is about as far from peaceful as you can get

gonefishin 02-27-2025 04:58 PM

I will never forget seeing "The Poseidon Adventure" for the first time. I was amazed! Kind of like watching "Top Gun" on the big screen when it first came out - breathtaking!

RIP.

I’m not super into westerns and Unforgiven is still one of my favorite movies. Hackman was so good. Agree with everyone that Hoosiers is top notch. Hackman didn’t think so at the time apparently.

SyrNy1960 02-27-2025 05:07 PM

Great actor! RIP 🥲

StraightRaceCards 02-27-2025 05:19 PM

Agree with the sentiment here.

Hackman was fantastic and I think about Hoosiers a lot. Especially in coaching.

I hope to coach like coach Dale!

Yes! And he even made Behind Enemy Lines eminently watchable on a slow sports afternoon.

loved this scene, actually got a Jack Russell because of it...not sure in retrospect he was right but they have to be up there.

RIP.

I remember as a kid this movie and when he died in it, it was tough as a little kid you watched a movie like this so intently, wanted him to make it out.

BobbyStrawberry 02-27-2025 07:25 PM

No one has mentioned The Firm yet - he's very good in that movie too.

Although The French Connection is one of the greatest movies ever

His first card I believe, and an early photo from 1964.

MR. Hackman had a memorable role in the Birdcage comedy as Senator Keeley.

In drag he looked just like Maude (Bea Arthur).

RIP to a fine actor (and his wife and dog).

Michael B 02-28-2025 09:57 PM

I like his characters though I have only seen three of his movies more than once - "Runaway Jury", "Enemy of the State" and "The Firm".

The others I enjoyed but only saw once were - "No Way Out", "Hoosiers", "The Poseiden Adventure", "Young Frankenstein" and "The Conversation".

Peter_Spaeth 02-28-2025 10:01 PM

People may not recall that he was in Bonnie and Clyde way back when.

Loved Bonnie & Clyde!!! Another great movie I watched as a kid and probably have not seen it in 40 years, but can still remember almost all of it. May need to throw that on this weekend.

Great movie that also included the film debut of another acting legend, Gene Wilder.

Aquarian Sports Cards 03-01-2025 09:16 AM

The Blind Hermit, Young Frankenstein.

I was going to make espresso...

Yeah, the famous scene in the car with, in hindsight, an unbelievable group -- Beatty, Dunaway, Wilder and Hackman. Not to mention Estelle Parsons who won an Oscar.

BobbyStrawberry 03-01-2025 11:09 AM

Another movie he's great in: No Way Out, with Kevin Costner. If you've seen the film, the story reverberates with current events

Another great movie, and what a great twist!

Good call! And I love Willem Dafoe but I thought that straight man role was not a good fit for him. Hackman, on the other hand, killed it.
