Haha Very true. I've made this point before. She is one of the worst movie characters in history. First, she arrives arrogant and spoiled, with a typical "woe is me" attitude. She flirts and then cheats with a stranger despite being engaged - with her planned marriage just a scam for money and security as her family is now destitute, something she keeps from her fiance. She ends up choosing the stranger over both her fiance and mother, abandoning the latter in a lifeboat. When the ship sinks, she never once offers a spot on the door or to take turns with Leo, causing his death. Years later, she marries for convenience, while still in love with Leo - something I'm sure her husband would love to know. Lastly, after the crew searching the wreckage of the Titanic is gracious enough to give her room and board, and despite knowing the resources and time they spent looking for the gem, she selfishly throws it overboard. What a terrible human being!

LOL, lot of Billy Zane fans in this thread. I think he'd be disappointed to hear his performance engendered any sympathies for his character whatsoever.

If any character in movie history deserved to be cucked...it was that one. ;)

As terrible as Zane's character was - which I agree with you, that doesn't make Rose any better of a person. Not one iota. The real victim here was Leo lol

I think there were about 1600 other souls on that ship who met a watery grave and didn't get to participate in the cucking of Caledon Hockley (bet you didn't remember that was that character's name...because I sure didn't) that might disagree with you. ;)

#1. Jack was a willing participant in the cucking of Caledon.

#2. I distinctly remember Jack Dawson pursuing Rose, and not the other way around, for the majority of the movie...but it's been awhile since I've seen it, and I may be proven wrong.

#3. So maybe blame Jack's peen, for sliding off that barn door and into the bottomless abyss. Would Jack's ego ever have allowed him to switch off with Rose anyways? I doubt it.

#4. Jack was a shitty artist. I'm also a shitty artist, so I can say that out loud without getting into any trouble.

2. Who cares that he "pursued" her. SHE was the one engaged to a man she obviously never loved or even liked - just for his money and security. So painting Jack as the one here at fault is ridiculous.

3. Doesn't matter if he would have accepted it, she never even attempted to offer, showing yet again Rose only cared for Rose. "I saw people starving on the street, but I knew they would have too much pride in accepting charity, so I ate everything myself" lol

4. Jack was a shitty artist? According to who? You by your own admission are apparently the last person who could spot talent. And even if that was true, Rose was dishonest and pretended otherwise, yet another slight on her character.

I'm gonna bow out now. Wasn't expecting serious responses to my completely un-serious statements about a mostly un-serious movie (despite it's harrowing general topic).

Someone brought up the movie and one of the fictional characters, I made personal observations about said fictional character, and a few people sounded offended.

I was a big fan of The Phantom comic strip. I read it religiously for years. I was excited when I heard they were making a movie based on it. Zane played the Phantom. Very disappointing movie.

When I think of Billy Zane the first movie I think of is Dead Calm with Nicole Kidman and Sam Neill. Great thriller! And it was from 1989 which makes me feel old.

While we're making you feel old Dan, the release of Dead Calm (1989) was closer in time to the relase of The Ten Commandments (1956) than it is to the present day. :D

Zane was also great as the demon in Tales from the Crypt: Demon Knight.

One of my favorite forgotten movies from that time period. I must have watched that film at least a couple dozen times during the heyday of 1990's HBO.

Yikes. And I looked, Nicole Kidman was only 20 when that movie was made. Sam Neill robbing the cradle.
