Trivia: Defense, Power and Speed

Of the top 20 players in career Defensive WAR (whose playing careers began after 1914), only 4 have more than 300 career home runs. And only 3 have more than 300 stolen bases.

Name those players.

Bonus: Which of the four players with over 300 career home runs has the most stolen bases?

Mark17 02-07-2025 04:44 PM

Willie Mays was great defensively, had a ton of stolen bases, and over 600 home runs. He's the best overall in these 3 categories.

He's perhaps the best outfielder overall in those three categories...But Willie Mays only ranks 69th in career defensive WAR.

Not sure if Brooks got to 300 HRs, but I’m going to guess him.

D. Bergin 02-07-2025 06:20 PM

Luis Aparicio on the Stolen base side?

BobbyStrawberry 02-07-2025 06:23 PM

Ozzie Smith

D. Bergin 02-07-2025 06:24 PM

Cal Ripken on the HR side?

bk400 02-07-2025 06:53 PM

Ozzie and Luis Aparicio are both correct on the stolen base side.

Cal Ripken is correct on the home run side (noting that he does not have the most home runs of the four...)

Brooks Robinson did not get there in home runs.

Andruw Jones for home runs?

Aquarian Sports Cards 02-07-2025 07:06 PM

Adrian Beltre for HR's.

After replay review, I'll give credit for Andruw Jones (so he's actually the fifth player with more than 300 home runs). He's ranked 22nd in dWar, but I missed two players above him whose career started just before 1914. So my bad.

So far, for home runs we have Cal Ripken and Andruw Jones, looking for 3 more.

SBs: Ozzie Smith and Luis Aparicio. Looking for 1 more.

Mark17 02-07-2025 07:17 PM

Clemente?
Bench?

Bench?

Surprisingly, Clemente only had 240 home runs and 83 stolen bases in his career (and ranked 186th in dWAR).

Bench had 389 HRs, but ranked only 56th in dWAR. You're on the right track looking at catchers, though...

Correct on Beltre!

Looking for 2 more on the home run side. 1 more for stolen bases.

I-Rod?

Bingo. One more left for HRs and SBs.

Peter_Spaeth 02-07-2025 09:02 PM

Was Gary Carter guessed yet?

Peter_Spaeth 02-07-2025 09:04 PM

Vizquel had a lot of steals and I think great defensive stats though people bitched about his range and thought they were inflated.

You got them both! Gary Carter for HRs and Omar Visquel for SBs.

So the lists:

Ripken
Carter
Beltre
I-Rod
Andruw Jones

Ozzie Smith
Luis Aparicio
Omar Visquel

Now for the bonus -- I'll just say that Andruw Jones had the most steals of the 5 power hitters. But #2 is not far behind. Anyone venture a guess?

I would guess Beltre.

Where's Lofton in DWAR? As I was scrolling down I was thinking of guessing him.

Kenny Lofton ranks 107th.

The answer is Pudge, who apparently was anything but. I-Rod finished his career with 127 stolen bases.
