Best Hornsby Card

I'm guessing this topic has come up at some point here, but I wanted to ask: What do Net54 members think is Rogers Hornsby's single best card? Since he didn't make it into the Cracker Jack sets and was largely finished by the time the Goudeys came around, but is a first-tier HOFer up there with Ruth, Cobb, Speaker, Wagner, Gehrig, Foxx, etc. was wondering what people thought.

luciobar1980 02-06-2025 10:37 AM

I like his Goudey #119. I'm not a big fan of the #188 simply due to the placement of his name.

luciobar1980 02-06-2025 10:39 AM

Speaking of.. Hornsby is cursed with having two otherwise cool cards with bad name placement...

Here is my only Hornsby. But others I really like include R315, E220, and 1933 Uncle Jacks.

For me it’s the 1916-20 big heads
That’s the one that got me started on the set

I agree...Hornsby does have a fair amount of attractive, interesting cards. Here is one of my favorites, his W503 card, which has a great batting image and unique backdrop.

Thanks for posting that card. Never seen it before and agree it's a great image

How about an only graded example Hornsby?

I'm going with the first of his five different m114s (not including caption variations) which was among the very first m114 posters released in December 1916, which qualifies as a "rookie card" by my definition.

Never thought of Hornsby as someone who hit like Clemente, with his back foot off the ground at the moment of contact.

Most folks in his day, though he was a d*ck, so it's appropriate?

Not many!

I vote for the 119 Goudey or the Diamond Star, two very nice looking art cards of the greatest hitting 2B.

The 1917 Boston Store and Collins Mccarthy have to be near the top being so rare and his rookie card after all. They don't seem to come up too often.

I recommend a photo or an oddball item instead of a card. Here are two of mine.

Here is a Hornsby card that is hardly ever seen from an issue that is obscure as all get out...the 1933 Uncle Jacks set.

Brian (not my card)

Thank you Doug! I had no idea he had such an early M114. Great item!

Austin, Texas is a tourist destination city. If anybody's in Austin, the Hornsby Cemetery isn't too far from the airport. The Rajah was a bat master for sure.

JollyElm 02-09-2025 04:20 PM

I'm sure it's well-known enough, but it's worth restating here for the heck of it.
Hornsby got his odd, 'pluralized' first name, because it's his mother's maiden name - Mary Rogers. :)

I also like the W517 of Hornsby, especially the sepia tint version. I just noticed that it appears the Tattoo Orbit card of him, seen earlier in the thread, appears to utilize this same photo, just cropped and tilted slightly.

Here is the photo used to make the W517, taken by Conlon

Thanks Chris...I copied, and pasted the Conlon photo and Tattoo Orbit, and gave the Tattoo Orbit a little tilt, just to emphasize that the Tattoo Orbit does indeed appear to have used the Conlon photo (as does the W517) for its creation.

A related inquiry. Did other Tattoo Orbit cards utilize Conlon photos? Just in case anyone has some ideas.

Good call on the Tattoo Orbits Hornsby/Conlon connection. The Babe Herman is from a Conlon photo too.

Leon! I posted that card above! haha. Yeah, not sure what they were thinking there. There's not a great place for the name. Pretty sure they had the art made without considering where they would put the name, as no real great place for it.

doug34-36 02-11-2025 11:57 PM

I'm not sure if the 1923 Lections is his single best card, but it may be his Holiest of Holies:

https://www.net54baseball.com/pictur...ictureid=38231

. . . or is that "Holiest of Hornsbys"?

In any case, not my card.

doug34-36 02-12-2025 02:37 AM

I've always had a soft spot for this one.

I choose to think of it as an ultra-rare 1931-ish Times-Dispatch Gossip Section #38 ("Mr. Earl Jordon Found Talking to a Pretty Brunette Girl") with the highly-sought-after Purple Hornsby reverse, though technically of course it's another W517.

My guess is that, years later, after having served time for his egregious behavior, Mr. Earl Jordon married that Pretty Brunette Girl.

Great card!

Love his 1917 Collins McCarthy rookie card. Looks so young in that.

His "1916" UNC Big Head has been proven as not being from 1916, so his true rookie card is the 1917 Collins McCarthy (or Boston Store / Standard Baking)
