I went to a small (but ridiculously crowded) local show this weekend. Amongst the modern cards, Pokemon, and generally overpriced vintage, there was one showcase that caught my eye. I already had nearly everything they were selling; however, their prices were in line with the current market. I decided to pick up the Topps Mini versions of Ryan and Schmidt.

I’ve often told myself that I’m NOT building the ‘75 Topps set. (I have Brett, Yount, Ryan, Schmidt, and a handful of other HOFers)

Guess I’m NOT building the mini set, either. I’ve only got five HOFers. I can stop any time I want….

Why stop? Get 'em all, man!

Two months ago I decided that I absolutely, positively needed to add more critical mass to my collection of 1954, 1955, 1957, 1958, 1959, 1960, 1961, 1962, 1963 and 1965 Topps Baseball cards. Accordingly I just added these from a fellow boardie:

1957

6 cards including these:

1958

28 cards including these:

https://hosting.photobucket.com/85c5...bf70f4f8bf.jpg

1959

5 cards:

https://hosting.photobucket.com/85c5...d4fc5046c4.png

1961

3 cards:

https://hosting.photobucket.com/85c5...49c71e269c.png

1962

52 cards including these:

https://hosting.photobucket.com/85c5...de676b18e4.png

1963

12 cards including these:

https://hosting.photobucket.com/85c5...409d588907.png

1965

3 cards:

Since I've been concentrating on the earlier tougher issues, I only have 28 cards from the 1965 set. Therefore I need a large EX/MT+ lot (centering is not important to me but I want bright cards with sharp corners) to really get going on the 1965 set.

;)

Good luck with the 65s - I built a set 20 years ago, sold it, and am building another now. I think it's one of the best looking from the 1960s, and honestly one of Topps' best looking sets ever. From my experience, it is relatively easy to find cards in really nice shape at very good prices - obviously I was paying less 20 years ago but even now with the craziness, still some really good bargains to be had. No huge rookies, and beyond the Mantle, you can get any card in a nice mid-grade really affordable. Also, high numbers are plentiful and not very much more expensive than the rest. Having recently completed a 1966 set, I need the breather.

I agree! It was also the final year I bought any Baseball cards as a kid. By 1965 though my card collecting buddy and were such high powered efficient collectors that we completed a "set" from 1-264 by mid-May so I didn't dwell on them nearly as much as I did collecting the 1962 and 1963 Topps issues.

I call the ones I pictured above "high grade" but I neither know nor care what the grading companies would call them.

Been on the sidelines as I had hip replacement surgery last Wednesday (2/5), but this finally showed up in the mailbox today after doing the eBay authentication song and dance.

Glad to add this back as I had been to two different shows in the past month that had virtually no Jackie.

As an aside, I’m somewhat sickened as I remember paying well less than $100 for a comparable example of this card back when I was in college. Oh well, live and learn, I suppose. Very happy with this one.

Thanks Jolly. Not too soon at all, lol. I'm glad to have the hip crap in the rear view mirror now and happy to joke about it!

I picked up a lot of 1976 Topps from the recent Collector Connection auction. In essence, it’s a starter set of 100+ cards. That works out perfectly. I don’t yet have a ‘76 set. With these two, and about 15 other HOFers, I’m well on my way. :)

Nice cards. I thought for the longest time that I was "anti-" '75 minis, but at a show last month a Brett Mini RC in an old Beckett slab caught my eye and the price seemed reasonable, so I bought it. They seem very "period correct" to me, which is something I increasingly see as important for whatever reason.

Yes, let me advise you not to try to build the mini set. It's a tall task and demand seems as strong as ever these days. Of the ones you have, Ryan is sneaky-tough to find centered, and the Schmidt card is one of the 'factory shorts' that plague this set. More often than not the card is short from top to bottom and this can be true for older graded versions as well.

Wow!! Congrats Ian. That's extremely impressive.

Thanks Dean:)

For an 80-90s kid like me, Ryan was a superhuman figure. I was so excited to open the package up and put them all together.

Finally reeled in one of my personal white whales - 1973 Kellogg’s complete set with the Ryan graded. Set is in immaculate condition.

I love that particular Ryan; I also have a 9. It doesn't hurt that they aren't difficult to locate in super high grade.

Pickups from a local small show (40 tables or so…) literally two minutes from my house, so I couldn’t turn it down. Extremely surprised with what I was able to find there. The Jackie means I now have both the white and gray back!

Crazy, I went to two fairly large shows in the past month - and saw almost zero Jackie. Then I find this today raw for a song. [emoji851] It’s clearly got its issues, but dig that centering! The ‘56 commons were 8 I didn’t have for $4 and change a pop. Works for me.
