Take on grading

As I look at the grading market, I can't help but equate the similarities to the light beer market, where you have Bud Light, Coors Light and Miller Light. All with similar taste, branding, etc but all with the same price point. The consumer chooses which they prefer but don't necessarily pay any more for their products.
Now here is where grading companies feel in a way a lot the same. You have your 3-4 major companies (PSA,SGC,CGC,BGS) however pricing for the product and resale value all different but essentially the same product.
Same could be said about Ford, Dodge, Chevrolet, or soda.

The consumer ultimately makes their choice, but I find it crazy to think that a CGC 10 is much different than a PSA 10, but yet priced that way.

I got to thinking about this the other day when I read somewhere that someone wrote you shouldn't take a discount on your CGC or other non PSA items, similar grades should sell the same regardless of TCG, so long as one the major players, I could certainly see not including the small unknown.

In a perfect world, a PSA 10 would be an SGC 10 would be a CGC 10 and they'd all be worth the same. The reality is that a PSA 10 broken and out and resubmitted may or may not be a CGC 10 or a SCC 10, or even a PSA 10 again.

The other reality is that PSA grades a million cards more per month than the #2 grading company, and they share a parent company with the #3 company.

So, it's weird. And complicated. I suppose if owners of non-PSA slabs refused to sell them for less, fewer would sell for less....but good luck getting everyone to agree on that approach!

PSA's registry increases demand (hence price) for a lot of cards that otherwise might have a limited audience.
