Dynamite Magazine Panels

2 Attachment(s)
As almost everyone who grew up in the 1970s and 1980s will recall, the Scholastic publishing company blanketed elementary schools around the country each year with catalogs of books - it was an event those in my school (Highland Elementary, Cheshire, CT) looked forward to each year.

From 1974 through 1992, a key feature of Scholastic's offerings was Dynamite Magazine (first cover shown here). Each issue contained a number of recurring features (Bummers, Count Morbida's puzzles, Good News/Bad News, an advice column, craft ideas, etc.) along with feature stories on pop cultural figures from Fonzie to Kristy McNichol and from MTV to Ricky Schroeder.

In just their second issue in April of 1974, they included an article on Topps baseball cards featuring an interview with Sy Berger.

Also included, stapled into the spine, was a small sheet of 1974 Topps cards. Mostly these were 6-card sheets, but some 3-card varieties slipped in as well.

The very first cards I ever owned were from such a panel from 1978 - it was the year I first subscribed, and I received a panel like the one shown here with Darrell Porter, Al Oliver and 2 each of Tony Perez and Cecil Cooper.

Over the years, the Standard Catalog listed a panel or two from some years, but it was always woefully incomplete (probably because no record was ever kept).

I recently became obsessed with tracking down as many varieties as I could for each year and in posts that follow I will posted the results of my efforts.

Dynamite included the cards from 1974 through 1984, but all the posts will be here in the 1980 and earlier page.

A few general notes:

1) Because Topps' sheets were contained 12 rows, the top card(s) on every Dynamite panel were always from the 1st, 4th, 7th or 10th row. However, because they were 11 columns wide, this set up a situation which, if an entire sheet would be cut for this purpose, at least one strip of a single column was needed.
2) There is little consistency to how the sheets were cut - the same sheet could be cut once with column 1 as the single strip, and cut again with column 7 as the single strip. Also, there are 6-card panels where the left column of cards might appear as the right column on another panel.
3) I searched Worthpoint and eBay for my research. I do not know Dynamite's circulation figures, but relatively few issues exist out there in the open. Within that universe, some years seem far more plentiful than others making me thing their circulation numbers changed over the years.

Dynamite Panels - 1974

Issue 2, featuring the Walton family on the cover, is dated April, 1974. This is the issue which contains the article on Topps (1952 high numbers worth $10 each?? An old Honus Wagner for $1,500?!?!?).

The 1974 set was issued in 5 sheets, anchored by Rader, Mitterwald, Lis, Braun and Phillips in the upper left corners. Of these, panels from the Lis (9 panels), Braun (6) and Phillips (5) are known.

Some lucky kids got second-year Schmidts, but Yaz and Marichal were also possibilities (parenthetical numbers, i.e. 'x3', indicates where I found multiples of a given panel):

Looking forward to this Dewey. Up until 1994 one of my collecting parameters was everything and anything listed in the Standard Catalog for Topps. For some reason Lemke did include Dynamite panels for some years. I have ended up with all the panels listed in the Catalog save one, supposedly from 1977.

I was aware from searching for it that the Catalog does not list all the possible panels, but have never expanded my parameters to collect them all. I would however like to find my missing one if it exists. The 2011 Catalog listed 2 panels for 1977, the one I am looking for says it had Henderson/Medich/Johnstone/Geronimo/Brett/Bumbry

Looking forward to your 1977 list

Nice job by Topps making sure there were checklists. Shades of the Win-A-Card game!

Awesome! I look forward to reading more; I have 16 Dynamite/Hot Dog magazines with panels, and I'm still looking to track down the rest.

I also have a few questions you might answer along the way. For example, does Hot Dog 9, with Miss Piggy on the cover, have 1981 Topps baseball cards in it? And I'm unsure about Dynamite 127. Are there cards like the cover says? If so, what are they?

Again, really looking forward to following this thread!!!

deweyinthehall 01-17-2025 05:19 PM

Hi - I have no idea what Hot Dog Magazine is/was - did their issues also include cards?

I just checked into Dynamite 127 and lo and behold it has cards. I had thought 1984 was the final year, but was wrong. I will work 1985 and if needed beyond into my research and provide updates here.

Oh, crap - Topps had ANOTHER way of distributing cards?!?

I'm gonna need to incorporate this into my Topps Set Pages (shameless plug - https://mrpekrul.wixsite.com/narciss...ps-set-history)

Grigsby 01-17-2025 10:18 PM

I have been interested in these for a few years now

The magazines arent rare but arent common either

In my opinion they are undervalued

Is there any indication of other sports (football) ?

While looking at the Hot Dog magazines on eBay I noticed the 1984 Michael Jackson issue had 1984 Topps Football stickers.

In doing my research, I did see Dynamite issues with Topps football panels - I remember seeing some from 1975 and 1977.

Dynamite Panels - 1978

1 Attachment(s)
What? Me worry?

Issue 47, April 1978, featured a birthday tribute to Mad Magazine.

It is likely that Dynamite's circulation took off in 1978, as I have found 33 different panels, often with many multiples of each. It is by far the largest grouping I've found from any one year.

In 1978, Topps took to lettering its printing sheets, A-E, for the first time. All known panels from this year are from sheets A and B, which makes it seem likely that perhaps only these sheets were made available.

This makes me wonder whether the cards were shipped to Scholastic already cut or if they were cut once there.

The Eddie Murray rookie is included in some B Sheet panels.

By far, 1978's A sheet has the greatest number of cards which can be ID'd on existing Dynamite Panels than any other in any year. Of 132 cards (including 11 DPs), all but 24 are respresented. The only cards on the A sheet not currently known to exist on a Dynamite Panel are: Cey, Winfield, Brett, Thormodsgard, Murcer, Singleton, Barr, Geronimo, Foli, Moskau, DeJesus, Candelaria, Trillo, Borbon, Boone, Jefferson, Orta, Montefusco, Niekro and Sutter.

My guess is Topps cut the panels as they were "pushed" into the magazine. Printing plants for magazine may not have been able to set up to configure pushed inserts.

Issue 73, featuring John Schneider on the cover, was the June, 1980 issue. For some reason it took until the summer for Topps cards to be included. No idea why for the only time they delayed so long into the year.

Dynamite Panels - 1985

1 Attachment(s)
Before I started this thread, I had assumed the panels ceased in 1984, but someone mentioned issue 127 and I discovered 1985 cards had panels as well. They were in the February 1985 issue featuring Duran Duran on the cover.

I was only able to locate 5 panels, 4 from the D sheet and 1 from the C sheet.

Not to take this too far OT, but I saw a commercial recently and got very, very completely depressed.
This ancient relic, sadly, is Erin Gray now... :(

Dynamite Panels - 1986

1 Attachment(s)
To many a pre-teen boy (myself included) Wilma was quite alluring.

ANYWAY!

Come to find out that Dynamite also included card panels in their March 1986 edition - another one featuring Michael J. Fox (issue 134).

I could only locate 16 copies of this issue online, from which I was able to find evidence of just 3 panels.

Unless someone has additional information, 1986 is the final year that Dynamite seems to have included Topps panels.

Since I start this exercise, I learned of 3 years they did include panels that I had not previously known - 1974, 1985 and 1986.

Circulation must have plummeted in the late 80s as it's hard to even find copies from these years around the net.

Now, I suppose, I need to go look at those Hot Dog Magazines....

I ran across this related auction listing from Oregon Trail Sports Auctions September 1996 catalog.

Very interesting and informative thread Dewey

Dewey,

Kruk Cards in Michigan had a huge stash of Dynamite cards that were unlisted. I bought all my Dynamite panels from them. You may want to call them to see what unlisted inventory they had that could be of help.
