B. Uecker gone

Mr. "Just a bit outside" just passed. Loved his appearances on Johnny Carson

RIP Bob! While a dental student in baltimore...I'd routinely see ballplayers, etc as I lived close to camden yards and would bicycle around the city a lot. One day while speeding by some hotel I see bob uecker waiting for a ride...and I yelled "hey BOB UECKER!!!!" He "glared" at me!

That's my 1 run in with bob uecker!!!

Brian Van Horn 01-16-2025 09:25 AM

Viewing again the first "Major League" is on my schedule today. RIP Uecker.

Eric72 01-16-2025 09:37 AM

Bob Uecker was one of the funniest people in baseball, bar none. He will be sorely missed.

Here's a documentary from a few years back:

He was hilarious and seemed like a great guy.

GasHouseGang 01-16-2025 10:01 AM

Lifetime, he had 14 HR's. But he hit 1 off of Gaylord Perry, another off Fergie Jenkins, and even hit one off of Sandy Koufax!

Lucas00 01-16-2025 10:02 AM

Man. That is sad. Just a bit outside was always hilarious to me. And equally hilarious was what he said right after: He tried the corner and missed. As if it was barely a ball haha. Rip to ueck

Trublubrucru 01-16-2025 10:13 AM

He was the soundtrack to my summers from childhood on. Thank you Mr. Baseball, you made the game come alive and imageable on the airwaves...... and now he's probably up in Heaven....... given 'em Hell

Seven 01-16-2025 10:28 AM

We lost another iconic voice of the game. Loved his appearances in the Major League movies. RIP.

Fred 01-16-2025 10:34 AM

Sad for sure. Now he'll have front row seats for all the games!

Jobu 01-16-2025 11:09 AM

I am in my mid-40s and have listened to Ueck all of my life. I would usually listen to the games instead of watching because of him and I know I am not alone in that. This is a very sad day. He was such a huge part of the lives of Brewers fans that it is hard to overstate the loss - and he meant even more given our 0 World Series titles (and lone appearance way back in 1982) and so many very lean years as he was always a reason to tune in, no matter the score. In fact, in games where we were down a lot he often turned up the personality and storytelling and those games could be just as (if not more) entertaining as close games and wins.

One nice thing is that people here truly appreciated him and over the past decade everyone felt super privileged to be able to hear every game that he called because we knew it couldn't last forever given his age. The players loved him, the fans loved him, and everyone really let him know, which is nice because too often people pass and then the world shows how appreciated they were only after they are gone when they can't experience it - Ueck got to see it.

His Hall of Fame induction speech is an all-time classic:

Rest in peace Bob.

He said his strategy to catch a knuckleball was to wait for it to hit the backstop, then pick it up.

This gag which cost the Team money because it was decided the photo needed to be redone after some disrtibution, plus his shagging fly balls with a Tuba during the 64 World Series is said to have played a role in Bob Howsam arranging his exit from St Louis. They did keep the other Bob.

Hope he gets the Front Row

RIP. He brought so much joy to so many people.

Al C.risafulli 01-16-2025 01:18 PM

One of the guys who reminded us that baseball is fun. His HOF speech was one for the ages.

RIP Mr. Baseball

Had always hoped that when the Field of Dreams had another MLB game, it would be Bob Uecker leading the players out of the corn in the outfield.

byrone 01-16-2025 02:05 PM

Uecker telling the story about his rookie signing bonus, and how it was a lot of money for his Dad to pay. 😂

St. Peter is telling him how he had this date marked on his calendar, because he couldn't wait for the laughs to start rolling!!!!

R.I.P. Mr. Uecker.

Bob Uecker is what was good about baseball. I will miss him. A lot of us listened to him call a game. He could see what goes unobserved by many fans.

I saw him in St. Louis. I probably saw him many times. We'd often get to our seats in time to see some batting practice. I remember seeing him at game 7 of the 1964 World Series, mainly because Dad gently nudged my elbow and said look at Uecker... the band that walked around on the field pregame was playing Roll Out the Barrell, I think, I saw the accordion guy (because I don't recall seeing that instrument in person before then, in person) but this tall guy in a Cardinals uniform was walking around with a tuba. The other time I recall was in 1965 in St. Louis. I've mentioned it here before. Warren Spahn, at the end of his career, started the game for the Giants. McCarver was injured, so Uecker got a rare start as catcher for the Cardinals. Uecker spit his right thumb open trying to catch a pitch, time was called, manager, coaches, players and a trainer gathered at the plate, then they took Uecker's catcher's mitt and handed it to Mike Shannon, who geared up and caught the rest of the game.

I confess to listening to Uecker call a game a year or two ago, I chose the Milwaukee feed over the Cardinals' audio feed. And I agree with his brilliant one liners and great timing is delivering them, when on late night television. I think he was good for baseball. Baseball would benefit from an occasional "Uecker", I hope they realize that.

Well wishes to Mr. Uecker's family. I envision him up there with a nice seat on the front row. He deserves one.

What a great tribute, Frank.

When he did a promo for Wrestlemania with Andre The Giant, Andre had his huge hand on Bob's shoulder.....Bob says...Please take your foot off my shoulder.

Collectorsince62 01-16-2025 10:28 PM

Interviewer: Bob, did you really win the Minor League Player of the Year Award?

Uecker: That's actually true . . . but I was in my second year in the majors.

Been hoping to find Mr Belvedere streaming but no luck, that was my first experience with Uecker as a kid and immediately liked him.

Almost 5 years ago, Dr. Beckett and I taped a podcast talking about Mr. Uecker as well as Joe Garagiola.
