1979 Topps Baseball Iron-Ons Test Issue?
I ran across this piece described as a "1979 Topps Baseball Iron-Ons Test Issue Keith Hernandez Promotional Piece."
It was in Mastro's October 2007 Classic Collector Auction. Does anyone know anything about it? I can't find any reference to a similar set. https://www.postwarcards.com/wp-cont...n-11-copy.jpeg |
I have never come across one.
But welcome to the forum |
Topps would mock these up for internal use, creating Presentation Boards for one kind of pitch or another. Each piece was handmade by the New Product and /or Art Departments. I've not run across this one before but it's pretty awesome.

1979 Topps Baseball Iron-Ons Test Issue?
Quote:
John (the OP) & David in the same post = cardboard goodness. This 1979 design doe remind me of the 1968 Topps 3-D test issue (which itself looks like the basis for the 1969 base set). David, is this Hernandez similar to the 1972 Topps Clemente base card mock-up as it was likely a 1/1 just for presentation purposes? I wonder if another player was designed / printed like this. Guess the only difference is 1972 was a design candidate for the base sets while this 79 was a presentation test? https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/202...efa07f8776.jpg https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/202...08434ac55f.jpg https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/202...2302411fd0.jpg |
That Clemente was another mockup but I wish they had used that design at some point, it's really superb.
I've blogged on these over the years, a fascinating area with Topps: https://www.thetoppsarchives.com/search?q=mock |
