childhood card collection discovery

A buddy asked to check out his childhood card collection

said OK... this could be real good... stuff from 66 thru 71

Been going thru it and Im completely " underwhelmed " LOL

about 200 cards from almost every year...but almost no high #s, and ( I guess as could be expected ) 90% commons !

In addition, every Mantle, Mays, Aaron...well worn and " played with " ! LOL

He took trouble to put EVERY card in a plastic sheet ( every G- VG common, all of them ! LOL )

so far best stuff seems to be some of the late 60s early 70s inserts ( which Im guessing as a kid were played with the least ! )

and finding another example that this " last series/ 7 th series " thing..is obviously true

its been a lot of fun, but absolutely no pot of gold at end of his rainbow !

Gotta be honest, this thread gives me a bit of a joyful feeling. I'm tired of never being the guy who makes great impromptu finds, so it's nice to know I ain't alone.

Sounds about like the average childhood collection accumulated by ripping wax for half a dozen years.

Always nice to hear that my experience was typical.

Maybe next time you’ll find a fistful of Wagners.

At least it was 66-71 cards. Pretty much every mint condition really old collection I look at is beat up junk from the late 80s-early 90s.

Probably had fun reliving childhood memories with you...went back over my childhood collection, which to me is priceless. I stapled many valuable cards to a corkboard so they wouldn't get creased and beaten up playing with them.

childhood collection more..

Did more digging into friend collection and had some amusing / interesting thoughts -

The 60s Topps poster inserts... most all in NM...EXCEPT - the Mantle which used to be taped on the wall !

The 1970 T supers...had only six of these cards....so guessing back in day he just bought 3 packs ( two cards to a pack ) of these

Had a 67 T wax box. Totally destroyed..completely opened flat and used as a ..I dont know what

Getting to some interesting stuff soon - a small pile of little 69 T Supers, and a small bunch of the tough 71 T greatest, and claims he " has or remembers having ..one of those 71 T neighborhood kid cards

My first year of collecting baseball was 1978. My older sister felt like she was left out so she got into it as well (very briefly - like a few months and then gave me her cards as she is not a sports fan of any kind really). To make sure one wasn't stealing from the other, we would write our initials on the back of our cards. On top of that, my friends and I would play the baseball game on the backs of the cards so a lot of shuffling of the cards was done. The memories around this are worth more than the cards themselves.

My grandmother threw away my dad's childhood collection when he went to college but the way my dad talks about his collection is probably at odds with what he actually had, which probably had more in common with this one. I try to convince him of that anyway so he doesn't get so upset about it.

Hopefully your dad just replies "I don't give a damn what they're worth now! I just wish I still had those cards I had as a kid."

;)
