Stumbled across this fascinating clip from 1982, from what looks like a Nationally televised weekend game between the A's and the Red Sox.

Check out Umpire Russ Goetz. This is an ump with a loooong fuse. Caught hell from Dwight Evans, Jim Rice, Mike Heath, Cliff Johnson, Ralph Houk and of course Billy Martin. Had a pitcher on the mound everybody was swearing was gooping up the ball, including a young Bob Costas and whoever his announcing partner was. Had the benches clear. Had Rice charge the mound....TWICE. LOL!

Nobody got shit-canned. Everybody eventually went about their business of playing baseball. :D

Seems like a much better way to manage not only a baseball game but life in general. When shitheads like Joe West made the game about themselves it really changed the tone.

I liken it to a road rage mentality (which I've been guilty of) if you shrug your shoulders, smile and wave, don't react , and let idiots be idiots, things just find their own equilibrium. Umpires used to be the adult in the room managing toddlers but at some point they became toddlers themselves.
