2025 Pickup Thread
 

New Year. New Thread. I've been picking up both vintage and modern stars from the Cuban League and NPB lately and when this was offered to me a decent price I couldn't turn it down. On another note, the quailty of Topps Japan issues blow what we get here out of the water. I've got a half dozen other Superfractors from various years and releases and this by far the best card stock and look of all of them.

Not sure who was in charge of the photoshoots for 1990 first round draft picks, but this looks like Chipper just got out of a sauna! Haha

It was likely hot out...and teenagers are notoriously greasy. :D

This kid had an up and down first season in Japan, but all reports are that he's going to be a special player. I'll enjoy watching his progress.

Wow, very cool!

Purchased my first copy in 2006. Have casually watched for others since but this is the first Ive seen since then. Very happy to add it as a backup. I remember seeing it on the checklist at the time and thinking no way will I ever get to own one.

I'm not a big spender when it comes to modern. But I decided to consolidate some lesser value modern cards into a bigger one. Not sure how much higher Ohtani prices can go. But overall, I'm not into this for a whole lot.

I am not a fan or collector of these kinds of cards but that is pretty cool

What I actually like about modern cards is just how over-the-top gaudy they can be and that Topps Chrome Elly De La Cruz is fabulous!

I’m genuinely fascinated by how one could possibly arrive at that signature to represent “Ozzie Albies.” There’s just no relationship whatsoever to the actual letters, far as I can tell.

Edit: I guess maybe it’s just “Albies”? I can kind of maybe see it, in a modern art kind of way.

LCS pick up today, figured I’d pick up the current “hot guy” hopefully he pans out. Pitchers are so hard to get into because you truly do not know if they will even cut it, or need TJ surgery 4 months in or turn into the dreaded Brien Taylor 😂

Still tough to say a quarter of the way into the season.

In 2024 Paul Skenes went 11-3 pitching 133 innings in 23 games with a stellar ERA of 1.96. This year he's already pitched 54 2/3 innings in 9 games but his ERA has "deteriorated" to 2.63 and he's 3-4.

While the very important nostalgia element is missing from present day cards, they can most certainly be dazzling to the eye and thus very tempting indeed!

But I'm always very hesitant to buy one. Quite simply I'm a completist. If I buy a card of any player, that automatically means I have to go after all the cards in that specific subset however defined. And that can be a daunting task indeed.

Grades just popped on a few cards I sent in a group sub. All pulled from packs except for the Griffey which I bought raw for $20. I knew the Witt wouldn't grade high but wanted to have it slabbed anyway. I pulled it from a pack my Son-in-law bought me for my birthday last year. I was lucky to get a nice hit. I was also expecting an 8 on the gold Ohtani since it has slight wear on the top corner. But even at an 8 I figured it was still worth it. Overall, very satisfied.

I gave up on finding this at a decent price in a PSA slab.
