REA results - 12/8/24
 

Market seems super healthy from my perspective. I got shutout of about a dozen lots I thought I was being aggressive on.

Cracker Jacks seem to be at all time highs (1914 that is - I haven’t looked at how the 1915’s did yet).

However - these two cards below - sold for 31k each and imo buyers did real well in each. I’m regretting not going harder for Joe Jackson.

If I am going to drop 30k on a card, it won’t have a chunk missing from it.

First tier 1915 Cracker Jack hall of famers continue to hold their own as well.

Sgc 3 - Joe Jackson -$54k

Psa 2.5 - Honus Wagner - $16.8k

Psa 1 - Ty Cobb - $13.8k

Psa 2 - Mathewson - $8.1k

That’s the only reason it’s not in the stratosphere. Everything else about that card is strong. Missed opportunity for small guys like me. Whoever won that please dm me if interested in quick profit.

Ps - about 10 years ago, I bought a ruth rookie for 18 grand from Goodwin and it too was missing about 15% of the card. Many of you know the card I’m taking about. I sold it a few years later for just shy of 50 grand - and today it’s clearly a six figure card.

Iconic cards that are missing a little bit - are opportunities to get into the exclusive ownership fraternity!

Tip Top Wagner
 

Is the 1910 Tip Top Wagner the affordable alternative to the T-206? Interesting that it is about as rare. Saw the 1 go for 36 on Heritage so 186 for the 5 seems fair.

What do people think about the Morehouse Baking results? I saw the individual graded cards all were well over $1K (with many well above that), but then the ungraded lot of 76 went for "only" $21K, albeit the HOFers in that lot were in rough shape. Still feel that's good value.

Honus Wagner cards still seem to be doing well. $40.8k for the Croft’s Cocoa was impressive. Extremely rare cards like that will always draw attention.

I was following and/or actively interested in about 15 items. I only won this, and I paid more than I thought it would go for. It seems most items exceeded or met my expectations, with only a few coming in 10%+ below what I expected.

I was following a fair amount of 19th century items. Struck out. Everything I was following seemed to do quite well.

I had the best possible results for my wallet:

Things I was bidding on to possibly resell blew way past my top bid, and items I was bidding on for my PC (that I would have been willing to pay up for) went for my opening bid.

A Whitney with dog sold in Heritage two years ago for over 17K. SGC 4 with some ink marks on the front.

I got one little E98 I needed for $200 all in. Can't complain.

I hope that dog's descendants are collecting.

I was the underbidder on the Path Freres Ruth. I wanted it and was willing to over pay to add it to what I thought is a great fit in my collection. But I did have some (not much) self control. I had a number in mind and i did not go beyond what I was willing to pay. But someone was more willing then me. lol

I thought the Wajo Rose went about right, maybe a little less than i thought. Only four graded copies known? That card has potential still. You made a good buy.

Most of the big cards I would like i dont want to touch into this frenzy. Almost went another bid on the CJ Matty, dream card. Still kicking myself for not buying a Plank years ago, but I am sure I am not alone in that. Never found the right copy i wanted at the right time and then it exploded to a new level and beyond. This was a really nice one.

I can report the successful addition of the Spalding Pocket Scorebook to my holdings, that includes scorebooks patented by Harry Wright and George Wright. Remember, in the beginning, a scorecard one bought at the park had an empty box and perhaps only a few brief instructions on how to score. Then Harry, George, Al and others undertook to educate us and make a profit at the same time.

I also won the Opening Day 1896 New York Baseball Team program.

1. because it features the Detroit Wolverines as the opponent, but mostly
2. the cover features a newsboy hawking a copy of "The Journal" I feel strongly that a very similar program might have been used for the Newsboy League that the New York Evening World sponsored. We know that the Newsies played their games at the Old Polo Grounds up at 110th Street when the Giants were out of town.

Does any viewer have any program from such a game?

Judging by the results, Cracker Jacks are narrowing the gap to the monster of being the premier pre-war set to collect imo.

I don't know. The Monster is something that may be possible to collect on a budget as long as you're willing to compromise on condition. There are plenty of low-grade cards for mostly every card in the set minus the variations.

But Cracker Jack is always going to cost you and the pool of low-grade material is even smaller. Jackson and Cobb and Mathewson are never going to be in reach for people the same way a Cobb Green T206 will be.

On the Rose Johnson, can anyone explain how it is postally used without any addressee or address info? I've seen postcards in the past where only a little info was provided ("Ms. Smith Littlefield" for example), but this one has nothing.

I would have loved to add the Guerin Studio photos to go with the Von Der Ahe, but my budget is limited too much to even think it was possible.

The 14 CJ's did extremely well. I guess we've hit a new floor for a PSA 1 Cobb at $30k. I remember not too long ago when $10k for a 1 was big news. The Matty at $66k was healthy (many would rather have the pin hole vs missing paper). I didn't love the Joe Jackson as the paper loss was in part of his name but image very nice and probably won't see one this inexpensive again for awhile making it super desirable.

I really wanted that low grade super lot of 98 cards to help fill holes in my set. Went for higher than expected at over $600/card. If the winner wants to part with the Killifer let me know!

It had been a little while since I had won anything at auction and forgot how easy it is to get "caught" up in winning. No wonder the auction format is so successful. What's one more bid? Ok just one more.... Damnit this is the last one! :-)

Thought it was a really fun auction to watch. I was able to grab a few things I was watching - the 1914 Wajo CJ, the Wagner/Cobb m101-2, and the Bob Gibson type 1 following his 17 strikeout game in the 68 series.

I was expecting to go higher on both the CJ and the m101-2. I was the underbidder on the Cobb/Wagner in the Huggins and Scott auction Friday and glad I was since that one went for more than double the price of the REA example despite being the same grade. Granted the REA had the paper loss on 4 corners, but that to me isn’t worth over double the price when the rest of the image looks great. Similarly, the last comparable 1914 Wajo I’m aware of was the SGC 1 from Memory Lane in the spring, and that went for 2.5k more than this one.

I was also pleased with the price on the Gibson - part of that might be due to REA not calling out/identifying the significance of the image, but I’ll take it!

Pretty excited to add a couple pieces I’ve been after for awhile at a lower rate than I expected!

I finally cracked I to the Rose PC club. Nap was a serious stretch for me, so I will be seeing you all on the BST this weekend! I’ve always wanted one of these and the big four are way out of budget now, but Nap is one of the best looking portraits in the game, in my opinion, so happy that he is my addition.

I really wanted the Joss, but it closed while I was still trying for the T215.

Centering Savants, I like that, lol I had a PSA 4 that went for 11K and there was a 3.5 that went for 14K because of the Centering Savants.

Anyone here win the N284 King Kelly? I was very intrigued with the back stamps and was curious if that was the draw to this card and it's final price. For the grade, it seemed about right; but was curious if those stamps fueled the bidding. I was way out on bidding.

Great pickup, Bob. I remember when that exact copy of the Rose Lajoie sold at a bargain price in Memory Lane in May and I was kicking myself for missing it. I was hopeful when it appeared in this REA auction, but alas, it didn't sell cheaply twice in a row. Congrats!

Some amazing pick ups; you can’t wrong with a thread full of CJs and Rose Cos- congrats all.

That Lajoie was mine and it did sell cheap in memory lane. I was disappointed. Even more so to see it go for much more only a few months later. But oh well, you win some you lose some. Congrats on the Lajoie- it’s a gorgeous example and a great player to have a Rose PC of.

I got my butt whipped on the Exhibit Salutation set. Somebody really wanted that puppy!

I was following the unopened Piedmont packs and curious why a couple of lots went for $19K and then others went as high as $32K. I don't see where the photos or description were any different. Am I missing something?

I picked up a T206 Portrait I was lacking, happy with the cost. I bookmarked
a Wilt photo from his Globetrotting days and a game worn 1950s Brooklyn
cap, just to see their hammer values. I am behind the times on photos and
gameworn, was stunned by the Wilt result. Happy for all who got what they
wanted!
