Horner Cabinets

2 Attachment(s)
Does anyone know if there’s a Christy Mathewson Horner cabinet known to exist in his suit? Or is this image in his uniform the only one known? If it does exist, can someone post a pic?

Also, is this the only Plank known to exist, being cut from another piece? Does anyone happen to have the full image on the mount?

Thanks,
Tony

Horner

Hornerportraits.org has the most complete list we are likely to find. The only Matty is the shot of him in uniform.

Horner was an incredible artist, I'm grateful these images survive. Fantastic post, thanks for sharing.

I'm always on the lookout for poorly labeled Horner cabinets and photos. I've got one of each myself.

A Harry Barton 1905 portrait with mount and a cut out like your Plank of Monte Beville for my original 1903 Highlander collection:

Just to be clear - these are not my cabinets. :)

I'm only inquiring if anyone else has the images I referenced in my original post.

I seem to think that this is the only Plank known to exist, but we shall see.

For clarity, the smaller oval Horner images, are not Horner "Cabinets", they are cut-outs from a larger team composite and should not be compared to a regular cabinet in terms of value or desirability.

A cabinet for the thread.... Art Wilson presumably taken the same day as the Matty, as the Giants team probably had a sitting with Horner. Which if is the case, then the proposed date for the Horner Mathewson(1904) might be incorrect as Wilson did not play for the Giants until 1908. Furthered by the fact that he did not move to the Washington Street address until 1905(however the images could have been produced from the original negative and mounted at a later date, I have seen many different mounts used for the same images) as these were offered for sale to the public at his various photography locations over the years. Also of note none of the Sporting Life Giants composites from 1904-1907 use the Mathewson image above.

The uniform worn by Mathewson and Wilson in the posted Horner cabinets, with NY on the sleeve in a style similar to the current Mets' logo, was worn by the Giants in 1909 and 1910.

Further evidence that the Mathewson Horner is certainly later than previously suggested..

Thanks!

While we are at it, why dont we just show 'em off if you have some....

Here's a link to where the full/mostly full composite with the Plank was sold before it was cut up. Still think it was a shame someone cut it up despite the condition.

I'm not so sure that was the one that was cut up. When I bought my Beville, there was a seller on eBay, their user name had something to do with Canada from what I remember, who somehow had access to dozens of these photos from all different teams. I remember I also purchased a Howell from the NY Cabinet that I later sold as a companion to my Beville.

There must have been multiples of the composites out in the world and this person either got one for themselves or acquired the photos already cut up. But I doubt very much they purchased that example because the auctions were vaguely titled and difficult to find.

Should also add that I say that because I do remember a Plank being on eBay. though I'm not sure it was the Plank in this thread.

My one Horner cabinet. The dogbite used to bother me but not hardly at all anymore. Horner was brilliant.

This same seller had also somehow acquired dozens of baseballs from the Rube Walberg estate. I purchase mine from them around the same time I bought my Beville and Howell Horner cut outs from them. Many of these Walberg win baseballs have hit the market since. This was quite a while ago:

Matty appears in full evening dress in his E107 RC, if that's any help.

I hate pimping out a photo I have on the BST in the T206 section, but here’s my only Horner.

Mine has a number on it, similar to other examples shared in this thread. Is this also some sort of cut-out of a composite or was this used in producing some other piece? Genuinely curious.

This image was used a few times, including his 1906 Fan Craze and his T206 portrait. Horner was a magnificent photographer!!

The oval images with numerals are all cut from larger composites. They are Horner "images" but not Horner "cabinets". The square image posted appears to have a handwritten numeral and "may" be an image peeled from its host cabinet, which was often done by publications that used the image for printing purposes and storage of the photo rather than leaving it on the bulky cabinet.

One more for the thread...

Scott, those cabinets are awesome.

What are the dimensions of the photos and the attached mount? 8x10?

sb1 12-05-2024 06:03 PM

Not that big, most of the cabinets are 5" x 7", the image itself 3 1/2 to 3 3/4" wide by 5" tall. But, I do have some cabinets that are slightly larger. My scans are high resolution and they come out pretty large when posted on Net54 making items appear larger than they are in hand.

I'd have a lot more of these photos, if it wasn't for Scott. :(

This is a "suit" photo of Murphy, but what is interesting is the back, where Horner is complaining about the lack of photography credit for the photo.

The back of that mount is FANTASTIC.

Regarding the Honus Wagner and Ty Cobb cabinets, is it true that only 1 Ty Cobb exists, and there are 3 Wagners?

1 Wagner is only the photograph, 1 example is the photo attached to another mount from the same period, and 1 is fully original. Am I Correct?

Tabe 12-06-2024 07:23 PM

That Mathewson is an incredible photograph. Just... wow.
