Early 90s on card autos
Going on an early 90s auto kick. So far I’ve started to collect 93/94 Nasbisco and Front Row All Time Greats.
Obviously Upper Deck Heroes is one. What other must haves are there for early 90s? The more obscure the better. |
Pretty much every brand started putting autos in packs after the Reggie chase in 1990. The score Franchise autos were fantastic.
The Mike Schmidt auto in 1991 Classic Best is a bit more obscure, if that's your thing. |
Not super early, but 1996 Leaf Signature Series and 2000 Fleer Greats of the Game are some of the best autograph sets ever IMO.

Yeah I'd be looking for earlier than that. Like 1990-1995. I do love the Signature Series though. Just recently completed the Jeter run for that.

Is 1995 too late for you? If not, the 95 Upper Deck autos are great. They weren't hard to pull, were all redemptions, and had an amazing checklist.

I’m mainly looking to focus on 90-95.
I figure 1996 is when they became super mainstream with Leaf Signature Series. Just enjoying going after these. Lots of cool stuff! |

There's overlap with the Nabisco autos, but Canadian Club put out a series of autos in 1996. They're rather cheap, too.

1993 Stadium Club Team Collection had autos in each team set marked with the sticker saying so. Some teams had multiple players (Atlanta Braves had Javy Lopez, Ryan Klesko, Chipper) and others just had one player (Dodgers Karros).
I think its a decent sized checklist though maybe a little ambiguity around it. Pretty sure these were produced by Treat (Brooks Robinson's company). |

Just remembered the 1995 Tombstone Pizza cards. I have a George Brett auto still unopened in the single card pack. Bench and Gibson are out there too. SN2000 on the back. Mine is #1737/2000. A Brett sold sold last month on eBay for $65! Hmmm...

Personally I would avoid the UD Heroes. Many of them are fading badly now: look on eBay and you'll see.

every auto is subject to fading. there are plenty of UD Heroes autos that haven't faded. Mine hasn't. The key is to properly take care of it to prevent fading. Back in the early 90s, people didn't know to take care of their autos as well, and many of the UD Heroes sat in card show cases for years. But if your auto isn't faded yet, and you take care of it, it shouldn't fade in the future. No reason to avoid a strong auto on a UD Heroes. Just bypass the ones that are already faded.
