Apologies but pre-war vintage is definitely not in my wheelhouse. I purchased a large collection of primarily post-war vintage autographs (1950s-1980s), but tucked inside one of the binders was this little guy. The original collector had about 10 autos from Reese, but this was by far the coolest piece.

I love the card, but it's not exactly something that fits with my PC so I'll likely sell at some point. Is my best move value-wise, to slab/authenticate it? Do I let JSA authenticate and then have SGC slab it? Or just knock it all out with PSA. Is the increased value worth paying the fees in this case?

SGC and PSA are the same company. If you wanted to spend the cash on it, then I'd probably go with a PSA slab.

Perhaps you could use the provenance of the collection you purchased as the proof of authenticity. I really hate the idea of giving JSA and PSA the final stamp of approval because if you know it's real, then why bother? Now if you can get a few hundred bucks extra (after fees), and the time and effort is worth it to you, then knock yourself out.

Best bet is to consign it with a good AH and let them handle the authentication/encapsulation for you. Can't go wrong with REA or LoTG.

Well, I would love that card and be darned happy to have it. I wouldn't sell it. He was known as the nicest man in baseball, and as stated above, had a very interesting baseball life, including Babe Ruth's roommate on the road for a couple of years.

So, what's the difference? Different slabs, different billing.

Same crappy subjectivity and the same company in the opinion of a lot of people now that it's all under one "parent" (same) company.

As a kid growing up in Orange County in the 1970s, I went to many Angels games, and I usually arrived early for autographs. I would marvel at Jimmie's talent with a fungo bat. He must have been in his 70s. He truly was a fungo master, which he twirled almost like baton when he hit the ball around during warm-ups. He was always flashing a smile, and he was great with us kids. He was truly an Angels legend.

Same memories of Reese here but I remember watching him in the late ‘80s

You guys are great! Thanks for the Reese memories. I had previously read his bio in baseball-reference and it sounds like he was a treasure to both baseball and everyone he met.

And yes, even though it's a fantastic card, I need to try and recoup some of my investment into this collection. So for now, I'll either send it to PSA to be authenticated and slabbed or right to an AH and let then decide how to deal with it.

Please keep in mind that it may not exactly bring piles of money, so an auction house may not wish to accept it as a single item consignment which would require slabbing.

Thanks, Billy! That makes sense. I'm not too worried either way. I'll chat with someone at a few places and see where they land. I'm not even sure what to expect value-wise to begin with so I'm guaranteed not to be disappointed! ;)

Great outlook! It's a nice card of a well-loved player and coach. As can be expected, he never turned down an autograph request and lived a very long life, but the combination of it being on that card certainly helps!
