Colgan's Chips - storage
 

Does anyone have a suggestion for the best way to store Colgan's Chips? Is there something from the coin side that makes more sense than a top loader? I just picked up my 1st off ebay and it is raw, so looking for options.

If it doesn't look right/authentic, please share that too. Also, feel free to post any you may have. CliffyB has a fantastic Wagner in the November pick ups thread. Amazing chip.

If you choose encapsulation, whether an old slab like this one or new, SGC does the best work.

You could definitely buy those press and seal coin holders inexpensively online or at any coin store. There has to be a great size available for these if you quickly research.

If I collected these and had a couple of piles of beaters that I didn't want to permanently encase in such a fashion, I'd be buying a few empty Colgan's tins. For the people on the forum who own these tins, are they safe for this purpose? Will the cards go in and out with ease?

Your Waddell looks totally authentic to me. Congrats...it is always fun to pick up a Rube. I store my ungraded Colgan's in Card Saver 2 sleeves. Not ideal, but I have determined that they stay better and in the proper alignment if I slide them down to the bottom third of the sleeve.

Here is an off-center example that I have that reveals a little of how the player's images were separated from each other on the printing sheets before being punched out.

I appreciate the replies and information! I doubt I'll have it graded due to the paper loss but i agree, SGC looks much better on these. I didn't consider a tin for storage but that makes a lot of sense if I add more and it's a cool addition as well. I will likely go that route or the card saver 2s.

The 3 that I have I just use the tobacco sized top loaders with matching sleaves.

I made a video a few years back showing my Colgan’s collection and you can see my storage choice. I use trimmed down card savers to stabilize and then insert into binder pages.

I would also consider doing a penny sleeve in a regular toploader. That's how I used to keep my raw ones. My only one now is raw, and as far as I know, this is the container and contents. I think I have the card in a sleeve and toploader, as mentioned.

Pages with pockets for the those coin holders are available as well-- I use them for my px7 disks.

The Colgans are about the size of a silver dollar. I tried one or two in those coin holders but got a little skittish so went back to the penny sleeve/topholder approach. The Colgans are so thin that I was concerned they could slide from the plastic see-through part into the cardboard holder and get pinched there, and/or if any pressure were applied while in that state, it would most certainly cause a crease. Now mine did not slide in the week or two I left them there, but the way things can move around when storing pages and binders I did not want to have to check every one each time I looked at it, so I chickened out. Maybe they will hold just fine, and I suppose you could staple around it to make it more secure (although personally I hate the way that looks) but that was my worry.

The older style coin protectors had no adhesive--you were forced to staple them shut. While I agree that the staples don't provide the most ideal aesthetic, it may be safer and make the skittish rest easier. I think I would prefer using the coin holders over anything else because of how nicely they fit the discs. Anything else just looks so loose and wrong to me.
