Photo issues

Hoping the hive can chime in. I’m working off a new iPhone 16 and have two issues: 1) the photos that some members post show only as blue squares with question marks; and 2) I cannot load .jpeg photos into a thread or album. I don’t even get the option to downsize the file, but just get a failure notice.
Any help?

Not sure about the first issue, but it appears all photos need to be below 2MB to download directly into Net54.

It used to downsize for you automatically, but no longer does. You have to resize off of Net54 and then download to a thread or album.

I don't remember the system ever downsizing above a certain limit, probably the 2mb. It always gave an error if larger than that, from what I recall, but I could be wrong. The size issue mostly came about from the proliferation of giant file sizes that cellphone cameras can take.

"In the olden days we didn't have all of this technology!" My guess is, if we did a complete forum s/w upgrade, it might fix that. But the shit-to-equity ratio isn't that great.

And a card

Hi Leon,

I think we've talked about this before. It used to automatically downsize photos up to like 5MB or so, up until one of the updates you had to do.....I want to say sometime in the last 18 months or so....but my memory can be off a little bit on that.

Now it appears to be a hard 2MB cap.

I doubt it's anything you did. Maybe something your host defaulted your settings to automatically for whatever reason.

Are you using a web browser or the Tapatalk app? I have switched to exclusively posting pictures through the Tapatalk app as it is infinitely easier. That should fix your second issue as the app allows you to select the size to post. Medium size is perfect not only to display, but is permitted for all posts.

Your first issue I get when using the app and someone posts a picture by attaching it to their post rather than including it in the body of their reply. If that happens, go to a browser, click on the attachment to view it, then re-open the app and it will appear.

Hope that helps. If that isn't your particular issue, just post specifics on what you are using and I'll try to help. I've spent a lot of time figuring out the details of posting images to this type of board. I've gotten to the point where I actually pay for the premium Tapatalk app because it is soooo much nicer to deal with posting pictures.

Just to point out, when I reduced this 2.2MB file down to 2MB, it would not upload. I had to go under 2MB (below is 1.95MB) for it to upload.

Brian (hopefully this post is not too Grimm for some)

There are phone apps that can compress images. Just look up image compress or something similar in the app store.

Looks like closing and reopening with Safari fixed the first problem. I’ll keep trying for part two. Thanks

Ahh ... the classic STE ratio... haven't heard that one in a while. Thanks, Leon!

Can someone remind me how to resize photos? I am trying to post a bunch of photos to another thread, but nearly all are bigger than 2 MB. Thanks!

It depends on what type of computer / software you are using.

There are probably options to either "resize" and / or "compress" photos somewhere in whatever type you use. For me, using Microsoft Office 2010 (yes, it's old, but it does everything I need, and more), I hit the picture tab, then compress picture, then compress for documents, then ok, then save it with the same file name adding 'small' at the end so that I have both my full sized and "postable" versions.

Are you using the Tapatalk app? It is a free app for accessing the board. When you post a picture, you select the image from your phone and it will ask you what size. Choose medium size (which is the biggest the free version ofnthe app allows) and Tapatalk will resize it automatically. I use the app for posting pictures even when posting from desktop. I'll make the post, then switch to the app to add the pictures. It's seriously that much easier. If you prefer to use the desktop site, most photo hosting sites (I use imgr.com) allow you to resize your photos right in their site before using the url to post the image here.

Thanks, Timothy. I have not used Tapatalk, but I will definitely check it out.
