November Pickups

Here are a couple auction pickups that just arrived. The first is a 1936 Cubs cap from Lelands that was worn by Joe Marty in spring 1937, and the second is a Japanese crayon set from the late 1940s that I picked up from the Prestige Collectibles auction. The latter, which features pictures of eight Japanese Hall of Famers, marks my latest journey down the rabbit hole of oddball memorabilia. I was very impressed with the efficiency and communication of both auction houses, and the items arrived quickly.

Love me some oddball, and that one's just great!

Super cool! Do you have a list of the Japanese HOFers?

I bought some 1931 US Tour of Japan photos years ago. They were mostly US players, but a few Japanese players, including a number of future HOFers, were featured and signed as well.

Just picked up this incredible 1930 photo from an old timers game.
Not all the players were identified but I have narrowed it down. From left: 1.Dick Hoblitzell, 2.Fred Tenney, 3.Partial head that is unidentifiable, 4Candy LaChance, 5.Jimmy Collins, 6. (RMY thought this was Thomas Madden (most likely meant Bunny Madden as Thomas died 2 months before this photo) but I am pretty positive its Billy Hamilton, 7.Partial face that looks like Jack Quinn I believe is Hugh Duffy, 8.Pat Daley Red Sox transporter from 1876-1930!, and 9.Cy Young. Any opinions on the questionable ones? Ive attached the team photo from that day showing clearly that the player second from left is Fred Tenney.

Those old-timers' day photos are fantastic. Both of them. Thanks for posting, and, more than that, congratulations for having such great taste in photos.

According to the seller, here are the HOFers: Makoto Kozuru, Fumio Fujimura, Tetsuharu Kawakami, Kaoru Betto, Michio Nishizawa, Hiroshi Oshita, Juzo Sanada, Tokuji Iida and Shigeru Chiba. Torao Ooka is the only non-HOFer.

I have a couple dozen issues of Harper's Weekly but I'm really enjoying the one that arrived today. It's a four page supplement to the May 3, 1890 issue featuring woodcuts of Cap Anson, Tim Keefe, Buck Ewing, King Kelly, and others. It's a nice article, rosters for the upcoming season, along with some artwork and a cartoon. (The book worm was clearly not a White Sox fan though based on how much he chomped out of Comiskey.)

1958-62 Hartland Dick Groat Statue with Box and Tag

It's been a long road but I've now completed the 1958-62 Hartland set including all of the statues, original boxes, and original tags.

My last outstanding items were the Dick Groat Box and Tag. They arrived today :-)

My first Hartland was as a 13 year old in the 80s. I think I saw an ad in Becket Monthly and I saved up for most of a year to buy a Hartland Willie Mays statue. I had that single statue as my only Hartland for decades. It made the move to the UK with me and sat proudly in my study. Then in early 2020, I bought a couple more and kept going.

In order to get the Groat box and tag, I had to buy a big Hartland lot. I'll be selling the extras in BST....please keep a look out for them.

Congrats on an epic accomplishment Gary! Boxes and Tags too... my goodness. Such an iconic set to complete. Hope your visitors in the UK appreciate this as much as we do!

Nah, your statues are too white for my collection, Excellent job of picking up some nice white non smoking household statues, Congrats, they're beautiful.

I wonder what the price was, “back in the day.”

Some odds and ends that have come in this month and I finally got around to scanning. I know the consensus on the Tour of Japan PC now is that they are all much later than period, but I've been wanting one for years and finally found one at a decent price.
