O/T Cobby Photo and Personalized Autograph

1 Attachment(s)
A nice lady sent me a message concerning a photo she has.

She said-

This is what I know..
This was given to my step fathers grandfather. I believe he was a coach /mentor to Ty Cobb. The signature is written in pencil I believe. What I find so interesting is how personal this was “DAD”

She would like to know her best course of action for preserving and possibly insuring the photo, as well as valuation. The photo is 8 x 10. thanks!

There are true Cobb experts, and I am not one of them. However, the signature looks very good to me. I would send it to PSA/DNA to have it encapsulated, which would determine authenticity more conclusively, and also make it easier to insure. I think I'd insure it for $5,000, based on my somewhat fair understanding of the Cobb autograph market.

If it's also a type 1 photo $5000 could be quite low. PSA obviously can settle that as well.

It's not in pencil.

This is generally accepted, I think. From Google...I am sure there are different iterations of it, though.

“Type 1's are considered “1st generation photographs”, meaning they were developed from the original negative within 2 years of when the picture was taken. Type 2's are the second most desirable, typically. These are also developed from the original negative, but more than 2 years after the picture was taken.”

Preservation wise a slab is NOT the safest method. If displaying it should be framed behind museum glass done by professionals (not Michaels). If storing it, it should be stored in a maylar sleeve, then between acid free boards in an archival storage box. Sure PSA can render an opinion but you could also talk with autograph and art experts that can give you value and access if the photo is vintage or not.

PSA isn't the end all be all.

Strong +1 in regard to the proper method of preservation.

PSA is not necessary, and the autograph is not in pencil.

If the person wants to sell in the future, highly highly recommend PSA slab this wonderful picture.
