Ebay Authentication News

There are 400 or so employees at Ebay's authentication center in Syracuse. They are currently making about $19 an hour, and are protesting for more money.

I'm not sure whether knowing that near-minimum-wage employees are authenticating cards makes me confident in the process. Although I'm not sure what I should expect. I suppose a lot of the workers are collectors, who think it's neat to be able to make money looking at cards.

TCGPlayer is a subsidiary marketplace for trading card games, like Pokemon, Magic etc.. This isn't an authentication center owned by eBay or related to sports cards, authentication of which is outsourced.

Ebay bought TCG last year. It is most certainly an authentication center owned by ebay.

Read the attached link for more info.

Thank you - I should not have let the "or" into the clarification that this is not the sports program. Technically wrong is just as wrong as any other kind of wrong.

99.99% of collectors here will never interact with TCG Player

Your pre-war baseball cards are not being sent to Syracuse for authentication.

The eBay Authenticity Guarantee program goes to PSA as outlined by eBay

Yes, Syracuse authenticates Pokémon and other playing cards. As you point out, ungraded sports cards go to PSA in Los Angeles. And we know that graded cards go to CGC in Florida. It could be those companies pay their workers more than TCG does.

But there are a lot more Pokémon cards being authenticated than Topps and Panini. Some people on this board may be interested in how Ebay and TCG look at that authentication process.

Graded cards go to PSA and ungraded cards go to CGC.

If you don't want to work at McDonald's then you probably shouldn't apply for and accept a job at McDonald's in the first place.

Santa Ana. It is in a different county. We don't want the 'credit' for that one :)

I dunno, man. If the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim can blur those lines, then the rest of us can be excused for lumping y’all together.

Does CGC/CSG still review cards for ebay? The reason I ask is because my authenticated cards now come from ebay's New Jersey office (the same one where I believe they authenticate sneakers). I suppose it could be that CGC employees work on-site at ebay. Or CGC could authenticate in Sarasota and then ship cards in bulk to ebay in New Jersey for processing.

No, PSA does both now and CGC is not in that process anymore.

I was told they were making it PSA only when I complained about getting something back that said either PSA or CGC had authenticated and I indicated to them that all the material on their site talked about PSA and collectors did not regard CGC as in the same class as PSA.

Again, not our choice that an outsider tries to use our town to gloss his business. Besides, we have an actual major league team in Los Angeles. :)
