Blog post - Top 10 Mays Dream Cards
Here's a recent blog post that I wrote on the Top 10 Mays Dream Cards:
https://www.splendidsports.com/top-1...s-dream-cards/ Please respond and let me know everything I got wrong. Should be a long list! |
Well done. An enjoyable read. Gotta love the obscure cards of The Say Hey Kid
|
My scarcest Mays Topps items are the 67 Stand Up and Punch Out ( that 66 you have is a great item), and the 67 and 68 Discs. I have a "almost" set of the 68 Plaqs ( including the checklsts) but am missing the actual Mays plaq.

Fun stuff, Larry!
If I’m not mistaken, you also have the only complete Briggs Meats Mays panel that I’ve seen. |
I'm sorry I sold the green armour
Only 1 known Still have the plak and dipsy doodles |
I've always had a 52T Mays on my list of cards I'd like to pick up. However, other hobby priorities always pushed my funds in a different direction.

I really enjoyed reading that.
Here's another one you don't see every day. PSA has graded 7 copies. |

But now that you’ve reminded me just how rare they are, I probably need to think about raising my asking price for the one that I have on eBay. ;) |
What are the populations on the 1962 Pittsburgh Exhibit, 1967-68 Topps Disc and 1968 Topps Standup Mays? Those 3 plus the 1968 Topps Plak are on my top 10 list for Roberto Clemente.

On the standups, did you mean 1964? If the 68 exists, it’s news to me. But it seems like I learn about new exotic issues all the time. For the 67/68 test discs, they are pop 6. |

I collect Willie Mays, and there isn't a single card on that list that I would be interested in owning. Are you intending this to be the top 10 list of oddball cards? Or is this more intended to be your personal favorite top 10 list? I suspect if you were to poll most Mays collectors, they would place his more mainstream/flagship cards above these. Part of the problem to me of many of these cards is they just lack eye appeal. That's what is so great about many of his mainstream cards. They're just beautiful! 51 Bowman, 52 through 56 Topps, 58 Topps, 60 Topps, 54 Bowman. All are stunning cards.
I'm the same way with my Jackie Robinson collection though. There are numerous Jackie cards that I don't have, and don't intend to buy. Rather than seeking those out and buying every Jackie item I can find, I instead just buy duplicates of the ones I love most. To each their own though. There's no wrong way to collect! |

So to some extent, it’s intended to represent cards that you might mostly have to just dream about acquiring, simply because they are difficult to impossible to find. Slightly different twist than you had in mind with your list. |
