"NEW" 1967 Dexter Press Coke variations

Hi Gang:

I have turned up what I believe to be two new unchecklisted variations from the 1967 Dexter Press set. If you read the below link from PSA you will note at the bottom it says there are no differences between the bios for the team set and All Star set on the Bunning, Mays and Santo cards. Well, I am here to tell you that is not true. See below for different backs for the Mays and Santo. As of now I have not found/seen any different back for the Bunning.

This will open up a new slot on the Mays and Santo PSA player registries and the set checklist. I have found almost an even number for each of the Santo's, while the Mays with the words San Francisco all on the bottom line seems MUCH rarer than the other.

I'm embarrassed that I never spotted that in the last 25 years, one has the last line in the bio starting with 'Home' and the other one has the last line starting with 'Runs'.

If I understand you correctly, I think the Mays Master Set already recognizes the different backs, with the descriptions:

1967 DEXTER PRESS PREMIUMS WILLIE MAYS ALL-STAR
(starts bio with "Bats...")

and

1967 DEXTER PRESS PREMIUMS WILLIE MAYS
(starts bio with "Nickname...")

If you look at the photos in the registry of the two, one All Star Premium and the other as just Premium you will see BOTH have the same reverse. I am pointing out a DIFFERENT back for Mays that PSA says does not exist as they also do with the Santo and Bunning.

I just included links in my original post that will you show both backs.

Don't worry Cliff, this one got me also. Out of the 80 copies of this Santo I have, only one copy's last line starts with "runs". With the rest of the copies, the last line all start with "Home". So, I am guessing the copy with the last line starting with "Home" is the most common?

While looking at my Santo cards, found this Bunning back with a mis-print.

TY all, I have reviewed and updated the COMC Data Base. Never realized some of these variations before.

Think PSA will "honor" these and add them to the registry checklist for Mays and Santo?

I have one each of the different backs and PSA gives them different descriptions on the front and different Spec #'s in the set registry. Maybe I'm missing something.

You may very well have the two different backs of Mays. I am looking at the two in the number one Master set owned by Raulus and the third highest graded set that shows front and back and on both backs the last line is Francisco, California.

While the "new" variation that PSA says does not exist the last line says Alabama- Resides in San Francisco, California

It seems you may have both since you reference the two different words to begin the bio while I am referencing the last line

PSA may have graded your two without knowing/understanding the different backs. As they say in their write up about the set in the link I supplied above the Mays Bunning and Santo have no difference between the All Star set and the regular set bios. Which is incorrect as the two Santo's shown above prove as well as the two links I have showing the two different Mays backs.

That raulus guy...what a wanker!

In terms of PSA accepting the new Mays variation for the Master Mays set, I guess we'll see. They haven't responded positively to my requests, but perhaps others will have more success.

Along those lines, I actually recently acquired the "nickname" Mays variation, and sent a request to PSA to recognize this variant.

This is their response:

Thank you for submitting this request, and for your patience with this request.

I have reviewed your request with our research management team, and we are no longer noting the "All-Star" version of the Wilie Mays card. There are two versions, the "batter" version and the "nickname" version, but neither Mays card fits the "All-Star" variation according to the Standard Catalog, and there is no mention of the "batter" or "nickname" variation.

We are not going to be differentiating the two different versions "nickname" or the "batter" version--it's just going to be "Premiums." Given that , cert XXXXXXXX is correctly labeled.

I know this is new information, and we appreciate you bringing this to our attention.

Thank you for checking using the research request option, and for choosing PSA!

Got it, I see that on raulus' Mays Master Set. I was always under the impression that the differentiation between the "Premiums" and the "Premiums All-Star" was the different back.

The difference was the back but the All-Star version was sent to fans who didn't live in the markets of one of the 18 MLB teams. So it seems reasonable for the All-Star designation to be reserved for those 12 cards sent as part of the All-Star set redemption. Unless, there is evidence that one of the variants was exclusively used to in the All-Star set, then at best PSA could denote the variants without specifying "All-Star"

whiteymet 10-08-2024 09:02 PM

I guess we will never know for sure, but it seems logical to me that one back was from the "team" set while the other back is from the All Star set.

Especially since all but three PSA says (incorrectly in my eyes) All Stars do not have the different Bio's. Seems to me if 9 of the 12 All Stars have different Bio's that there was a different printing for the All Star set which would account for the Mays and Santo different backs.

Now we have to find a Bunning with a different back!
