The Tigers in the playoffs?

On July 4th the Tigers were 39-48, 9 games under .500 and 16 games behind the Clevelands. They trailed Minnesota, New York, Boston, KC, Houston, and Tampa for the last wild card. Today they're a game ahead and tied with KC for the 2nd wildcard spot and 8 games over .500.

No one in Detroit saw this coming. It has to rank up there as one of the best late season comebacks ever to make the playoffs. Are too many teams qualifying for the playoffs to begin with? This seems crazy that they're going to actually get in the playoffs with a bunch of kids and one starting pitcher.

How dare you overlook the great Javy Baez!

(Just kidding.)

Peter_Spaeth 09-24-2024 10:10 AM

Their leading hitter is at .262. Skubal is the whole team lol.

They're 20 and 8 since he went on the injured list!! Addition by subtraction.

I was baffled by that signing when it happened.

Riley Greene has still put together a really nice season. 24 HRs .351 obp/.485 slg. Seems like he has overtaken Torkelson as the top hitting prospect on the team.

Balticfox 09-24-2024 11:22 AM

Yay for the Tigers! 'Nuff said.

Is Torkelson even a prospect anymore?

Kerry Carpenter looks pretty good. I would expect them to get demolished in the divisional round, should they make it.

They just won again today. Beware the young, naive team on a huge roll!

Torkelson is Rob Deer playing first base. I don't think he's on the team next year. It's Parker Meadows who's been the MVP. And Riley Greene is an all-star who's still going to get better. The pitching has been fantastic. But they're so young it really doesn't make sense for them to be playing this well.

Balticfox 09-27-2024 10:51 AM

So all the Detroit Tigers need now going into a season ending three game series against the woeful Chicago White Sox is one win (or a loss by the Twins) and they'll clinch a playoff spot!

I get that you're from Detroit, but how is Parker Meadows, the MVP, he's hitting .243 in 250 AB????

He plays gold-glove caliber center field in a park where it really makes a difference. He's hitting .296 since he came back in August from injury. The team is 20 games over .500 when he's in the lineup.

And he's clutch: Parker Meadows, with his two home run thefts – one in Seattle against Cal Raleigh and the other in Baltimore against Colton Cowser. Meadows again, with two dramatic game-winning hits: The walk-off single that beat the Yankees in the Little League Classic at Williamsport and, of course, the two-out, 3-2 grand slam homer that beat San Diego 4-3.

And by the way....THE DETROIT TIGERS ARE IN THE PLAYOFFS!!

They're 31-11 in their last 42 games. Youngest roster in baseball. Best manager and best pitching coach. And whomever they play has to face Tarik Skubal in game 1. I wouldn't bet against them at this point. I don't think the Yankmees even wanna play this team right now.

As a Yankee fan, I can assure you...the Yankees are definitely beatable this year. Especially if you can navigate around Judge and Soto and get to their bullpen.

Their win percentage is .538, not .200.....lol.

And just like that they knock off the Astros. I think they have a great chance against Cleveland too.

Shoeless Moe 10-02-2024 06:25 PM

3 teams from the Central and 1 from the East left out of the last 4 in the AL.

Pretty sure that's never happened.

Bold prediction... Is this driven by anti-Yankees bias?

Bullpen. Bullpens win playoffs. Guy after guy with a lights out WHIP.

And it isn't just me.

Their bullpen has been amazing for sure. Outside of Bibee, who are their starters in a best of 5?

The Indians used to be my favourite American League team. This non-Indians outfit is down there with the New York Yankees and Texas Rangers.

Has Lively been ruled out, thought he was still possible. Cobb, Boyd, committee. Some clutch hits from the vastly underappreciated Jose Ramirez.

SAllen2556 10-03-2024 05:55 AM

Tigers win! Consider this: Josh Hader’s $19-million annual salary is more than the Tigers’ entire 26-man playoff roster!

After Skubal, our starters are TBD. I want a Tiger jersey with that on the back!

It's been the same story since August 1st. Bullpen game after bullpen game, yet they keep on winning. It's the weirdest year in Tiger history. No one, and I mean no one, saw this coming.

I fear this strategy will get exposed in a longer series, but the Clevelands seem to be doing the same thing. If KC can just oust the Yankmees.....oh I hate to dream such a thing!

Brent G. 10-03-2024 06:20 AM

I suppose having the worst team in history in the division helped get three Central teams into the playoffs, but KC and DET certainly showed they belong. What another gag job by the Orioles.

Lets GO ROYALS!

So far so good. Tough, exciting series, Subral was just overdue to be roughed up a bit.

BobbyStrawberry 10-12-2024 03:50 PM

My prediction: the Yankees are going to put a hurt on the Guardians.

Balticfox 10-12-2024 04:16 PM

Boooo! A Yankees versus non-Indians final fills me with loathing and disgust. I want both teams to lose.

Not Sure who to root for in hockey .
Blackhawks and Predators have not yet been forced to change their names ,
This year The Hurricanes would either be very appropriate or really really wrong ,
The blue jackets are intriguing ,
But if Utah can stick with The Hockey Club that’s who I’m rooting for .
And that’s the end of the hijack .. (sorry bout that)
Go Utah Hockey Club !

The Chicago Blackhawks were the first team I ever embraced as a lifetime favourite back in early 1959 when I found a Hockey card with a Blackhawk player on the street. I rather like the Nashville Predators as well.

I rather like the Nashville Predators as well. Nice name and logo.

The Blue Jackets are simply boring.

Bloody hell! I couldn't hate that European soccer style name more. I hope they fold.
