Fave Rube Waddell card?

I’ve always been fascinated by the stories connected to Rube Waddell. I’ve been meaning to add one to my Hall of Fame collection and would love to see from other Collectors which of his issues is your favorite.

My budget is probably $750 or so, FYI.

Here are a couple issues to help prime the pump…of these two, I lean more toward the throwing pose over his portrait, but both are pretty sweet.

Appreciate your ideas!

You wouldn't get one for the $750 range, but I love the E107.....

I feel like rube was one of the early Intimidator type pitchers. He was tall, and when he did well he did really well.

I know most stories make him sound goofy, but I'd think some players on the other team might think those goofy stories are so weird that they are a little scary and that rube was a bit mental. Pair that with a large frame and his great fastball I think players didn't look forward to facing him.

This Bregstone postcard to me shows that the best of all of his cards.

I vote for the T206 Portrait. A Net54 member has a copy that's been through the wringer. He has shown it many times. That copy is one of my all time favorite cards; not just of Waddell.

Personally I am most fond of the T206 portrait, but I always love the M101-1 for it’s writeup and as his rookie card.

A cheaper option might be a Fan Craze card (same image as used on other cards).

Agree - he does look a big dude, not just tall. And his antics must have added to his aura & intimidation.

Love this image - I'm not familar with the issue... hard to find? Outside of my budget of $750?

Unfortunately not, it's very rare. This example sold for over $2000 in a 2010 Hakes auction. Not sure what the going rate would be today.

The t3 Turkey Red would be my choice.

I've always liked this little set of 1951 Connie Mack book cards

Mine also but I've always liked oversized cards.

For more readily available Rube cards I like his throwing poses (T3, T206, E93) over his portrait cards (T206, E254 Colgan's, Fan Craze).

As a (in theory) less expensive alternative, here is his E91A card, shown with his E254 Colgan's and T206 card to emphasize that Rube's E91A noggin was created utilizing the same noggin photo as seen on those two other cards.

Another of Rube's obtainable cards is his M116 Sporting Life.

I am not a fan of graded cards, and I normally despise the ones that have the interior 'baggie', but the image of this one (not mine) was so mesmerizing I decided to not crop it down to just the card. To me it looks like two tigers are facing each other, the one at the top of the card with angry eyes, and the bottom one with eyes that are cool and calculating.

Brian (now I suggest you look up in the sky and check out some cloud formations)

Here is the T3. Also a great card, no one had posted the card so here it is.

I may be biased because this is my only Waddell card, but I think this is his best card, with his Turkey Red a close second. For me the pose and the sunset background make this one of the best of all T206 images. Definitely attainable for under $750.

JoeRand 09-27-2024 07:55 PM

I’d love to see it

Closing the loop here on my original post..
Thx to all for your suggestions. So many good choices here.

I decided to make this one below happen at the LOTG auction - I think I paid up a little here but the centering and the beautiful blue background was just too hard to pass up.

Thx again all -

Jeff
