Once Perfect, but ONLY Once:

Talk about the highs and lows on one career....

Pirates designate Domingo Germán for assignment

Germán, who pitched a perfect game last year, was cut one day after allowing seven runs -- six earned -- and seven hits over three innings as the Pirates were no-hit by the Chicago Cubs.

The 32-year-old right-hander was 0-1 with a 7.84 ERA in seven games for Pittsburgh this season, allowing 17 runs over 8⅔ innings in his past three appearances.

He is 31-29 with a 4.54 ERA in seven major league seasons.

Germán, who spent his first six major league seasons with the Yankees, was suspended for 81 games on Jan. 2, 2020, for violating the joint domestic violence, sexual assault and child abuse policy of Major League Baseball and the players' association.

On May 16, 2023, he was ejected from a game against the Toronto Blue Jays for using an banned sticky substance and suspended for 10 games.

Germán pitched the 24th perfect game in major league history June 28, 2023, at Oakland.

He was placed on the restricted list Aug. 2 after agreeing to voluntarily submit to inpatient treatment for alcohol abuse.

Germán elected free agency after the season and agreed to a minor league contract with the Pirates in mid-March. He made his Pirates debut Aug. 9.

1967 Red Sox Billy Rohr

From Wikipedia:

As a 21-year-old rookie, Rohr made his first MLB start at the New York Yankees' home opener on April 14, 1967. The slim left-hander faced future Hall of Famer Whitey Ford, and was one strike away from a no-hitter when Elston Howard hit a soft single into right-center field. Rohr proceeded to retire the next batter for a 3–0 shutout. His no-hit bid is also remembered for an over-the-shoulder diving catch made by left fielder Carl Yastrzemski to record the first out of the ninth inning.

In his next start, Rohr beat the Yankees again, this time 6–1, but only won one more game in the majors after that.

I said at the time I wasn't entirely shocked that it was Germán who threw a perfect game. I think my general attitude about it was "oh, of course he did".

I'm also not shocked he's essentially out of baseball a year later.

my Sophomore year of college I got the entire first round, 32 games, of the NCAA Tourney right, in my dorm pool. Astronomical odds against, which would win a crap ton of money if actually bet.

My subsequent rounds were so bad I finished 4th in the pool.
