I stopped by a yard sale and was going through a box of old books when I spotted this old arithmetic book from 1921. I just happened to flip through the pages when I spotted this one particular page. Look at the details. Does that sound familiar?

The Question They took Out

5. If you take the difference between the winning share and the losing share and divide it by 24, how much more than that would you have to pay players to lose on purpose?

That is part of why I got such a kick out of that page. The losing players still got $78,000 divided by 24 on top of whatever they may have gotten for the purpose of losing.

For being a fifth grade arithmetic book, this one page really touches on a deeper message from the 1919 World Series. That’s why I thought it was so cool.
