Star Jordans are going insane
|
I won't pretend to be knowledgeable about basketball cards, but I've always been under the belief that Beckett was only TPG that would grade Star issues.

288K for an 8. Guess the 101 has finally convinced people.

If you own one, sell and sell fast.

i sold my PSA6 star 101 back in June (on ebay) for 22K which was a high at the time.
Of course Hellcat (on the blowout forums) is always pumping them up--LOL!!! At the time i think the 7's were hitting 35-40k range. |
The 5x7 Court Kings -- which experts say was issued before the 101 so is his very first card -- is still lagging relatively speaking, probably due to size.

Kind of a strange valuation for this card, no? I understand Star pre-dates Fleer, but the 1986 Fleer set is an iconic set for the entire sport of basketball. The Star cards also feel akin to modern contemporary sets like Panini Elite Extra Edition or other lesser products like Leaf or the old Donruss Triple Play cards if anyone remembers those.

I get all that. It just looks like a bargain set with some of the cluttered photography, where it's sometimes hard to tell who the intended subject is, and some of his cards he's in the USA jersey instead of the Bulls jersey.
Just looks like a cheap card, in my opinion. |

Back in 2006, I bought a SCD 7.5 #101 Star Jordan off of Steve Taft for $1,550. Bank then, they were the only grading co that would authenticate them.
I believe in 2013, BGS started to grade them, and I crossed my SCD 7.5 to a BGS 8. I have to laugh, because back then, NOBODY wanted these cards. I was at the Philly Show offering them to a bunch of dealers and nobody wanted them. I also had a BGS 8 85-86 Star Jordan #117 2nd year, and the 1985 Gatorade BGS 7. I sold them on EBay for almost exactly what I paid for them. I think I got $1,600 for the #101, $250 for the #117 and $150 for the Gatorade. Where's my time machine at. :) Tony |
Jordan
Always thought that these early Star cards were interesting. Just returned from a 3 week visit to Italy and besides the sights and weather the other most notable things, the ABSOLUTE national obsession with Jordan/Nike/NBA. Not talking just the youngsters either, NBA related products everywhere. NBA channel on 24/7 and it’s well watched. In short, I think Milan (what a city) will get a franchise by 2030 with Peking to follow. Hoop, particularly Jordan, in my opinion has many fans and collectors on the horizon. 🍀

I picked up the Gatorade card during the pandemic in a SCD holder because it was way under the price of the BVG ones. Now I am thinking of crossing it to PSA if I decide to cash out. I sold a BGS 9 5 x 7 a few years too early...
A pair of good early Jordan cards to look at are the 1985 and 1986 Merchante issues from Spain. Can you imagine what one of the Jordan cards in the 1982 Acc-tion board games would go for? I once had a Worthy from the set but stupidly sold it. |
So do you guys consider the 1984-85 Star set an oddball set?
