Thoughts on this Miller Huggins signature?
 

It's on a program for a banquet in his honor in 1923. Looks very similar to known examples in some ways, but the middle initial is unlike most of those.

When signing autographs he typically would sign M.J. Huggins. Not his full name. Have you looked at it under magnification to see if the signature is actually part of the program? Without seeing or knowing more that would be my first impression based on the scan

It definitely looks like it might be printed on the program.

I don’t like it at all. The J is strangely bold, and the flourish on the end looks like it was colored in by a kid or something. All might make sense if pre-printed on the thing.

Agreed. My immediate thought was that it's a facsimile. They used a genuine signature to create it, but traced over it to make it bolder for their purposes. This explains why it still bears resemblance to a legitimate autograph, yet appears shaky, heavy/slow, slightly misformed and pen lifts/ink fills in inappropriate places. We've seen this time and again with facsimiles found on other items like cards and Autoballs.

Neat item but not a legitimate Huggins autograph IMO. Maybe a facimile as others have suggested but I doubt that as well.

You'd also be wanting to see some signs of aging with century-old black ink on paper. We're seeing none here. While most inks signed on paper are bound to age with the passage of time, facsimiles tend to remain bold.

I'm not pulling up any other programs from this banquet via online searching to prove that this is a facsimile, but will stick to that belief for now. That's all I can really do without having the piece in hand. For these reasons, I'd personally only treat the piece as a banquet program and whatever respective value it would carry if it had no signature at all.

Thanks guys. Yeah, I looked at it under 10x magnification and there is no variation to the ink. Has to be printed on there.
