What is going on with this guys 1958 Topps cards?

While searching for 1958 3rd Series miscuts for Kevin's latest project I kept running across some very odd 1958 Topps commons from one eBay seller. They have huge borders, razor sharp corners, are a brilliant white on the front, and are poorly printed on the front and back. I am guessing someone is printing these up for pennies and hoping to sell them for a couple of dollars to turn a profit. I don't know if the seller has similar bogus cards from other years, I didn't look. https://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_dkr...w=1958%20topps

Maybe he should substitute "weird" for "nice". Think I will buy one to see what I get

Edit---I offered $1 for Shaw and he took it. Will rteport back when received

Reprints? Corners are way to perfect

butchie_t 08-12-2024 02:11 PM

It looks like they have been printed on photo paper stock, and smudged during the printing process.

JMHO

None of the above in my guess. The blur is from photoshop stretching to his weird dimensions. The borders are whitened and the miscut ones are stretched to make colored borders. All his scans are photoshopped to square them and clean the borders. It’s a mess.

The feedback says this. The only reason it’s not worse is he probably takes a ton of returns

Ahhhh, I think you’re right, but what a bizarre thing to do and take the time to do. The seller apparently thinks it’s worth it though.

Strange. They look like reprints or fakes, but who is going to bother to fake a ‘58 Topps Bob Shaw?

Its his scanner / scanner settings. Looking at his other items, it appears he's upgraded to a Fujitsu since.

Is it possible these were cut from a printer's sheet that was misprinted? The only thing that makes me think that is because some of the cards seem to have color bleed into the white portion. That seems like an odd failure with a modern printer. Just a thought.

ALR-bishop 08-13-2024 02:45 PM

Shaw is on the way. Will report back

Weird scans.

Zach Wheat 08-16-2024 06:59 AM

Appears the photo's in the listings arent the same as the card received. Neg feedback indicates card is legit but has rounded corners, etc. Seems like an experienced seller - odd that he would do this.

ALR-bishop 08-17-2024 05:16 PM

Got the Shaw pictured above in the listing. It is just a regular 58 Topps Topps card miscut to where there is vitually no top border. Assume he has to know his listings are misleading as to what the cards he is selling actually look like as opposed to what is shown in the listings. Will contact him about it and see what he says. Likley he will say it is a scanner issue and he will offer refund but will see and report back. The transaction was less than $2 with shipping so it was mainly just a matter of curiousity for me.

Printing 101 if it was a smug print error it would show at bottom of each card not top of one and bottom of other also the dot pattern used in off-set printing is way off. This are some kind of reprint. Best guess is a bad xerox that bleed and hand cut. Personally I’d not waste even a curiosity couple of bucks and move on.

So ya I went back and looked at the photo up close and you can see very easily the their is a Rosetta pattern for the CMYK printing process dot pattern, which mean the card have been scanned and then reprinted. ——-100%——— fake.

I might be wrong, but didn't Topps Magazine (or another magazine) in the 90's have 3-panel reprint inserts like these?

Cliff Bowman 08-18-2024 10:39 PM

Either post #5 or post #8 is correct, he either did it intentionally with photo shop or unintentionally with a very funky scanner setting. Al bought a $2 Bob Shaw just to see what he would get and it's just a normal off grade and off center 1958 card.

I never get why people won't read threads but will reply to them.

ALR-bishop 08-19-2024 07:59 AM

As a follow up on the Shaw, there are no wide white side borders on the card he sent. It has only a sliver boarder at top, and wide but normal border at bottom. I am not a big fan of the 58 set but have one and what he sent is just a VG- 1958 card. He has not answered my question about why his scans show oddities and differences not present on the cards he ships. He may not answer but will report on whatever he does.

We have seen oddities like yellow squares on cards that look like variants but are just scanner issues. Some of his listings seem like that but the Shaw and some of the others he had up may have been further manipulated. Either way this seller is best avoided if getting the card shown in the listing is your goal

Yep, I ran into that with a 75 Hank Arron #660 card. Had a yellow box on it in the picture but not the card. At least I got another Aaron card out of the mix and did not pay a lot for it.

Al, can you scan the card you received from the eBay dud...e and post it here. My curiosity and nothing more, for the ask.

Butch....

ALR-bishop 08-19-2024 10:48 AM

Will do. Should get it on today later.
