Looking to send this in to sgc, it will cost $80 to grade and return shipping

What do you think this would grade as? It has an indentation near the as pictured

When it comes to grading, the graders tend to be tough on pieces like this.

A lot of it is just the sheer surface area at play, which means there's that much more in terms of opportunities for wrinkles and other surface imperfections. Plus there's that much more edge for dents and dings. Finally, often these pieces are very thin, more like paper than cardboard, so they're very condition sensitive, plus with large and vast fields of white on the front and back, often they can get some yellowing that comes into play.

My experience is that even pieces that look really good rarely grade above a 5 or a 6. And often they might come back at a 3 or a 4, simply because they have a lot of these minor imperfections. And with that dent, depending on how deep it goes, it might be more like a 2-3, or even a 1 if it's really deep and basically breaks the surface of the paper such that it's more like a little tear.

In terms of value, I'm not an expert on this specific issue for #7, but my guess is that it won't be worth a king's ransom, unless you can manage to get it into a PSA holder, and get it at the very tippy top of the pop charts. Even then, the demand for these issues often just isn't very strong, so usually you're looking at a few hundred bucks, maybe a little bit more with a really high grade and a very motivated buyer.

Good luck!

I purchased the 12 picture set for under 40 so I don’t have much in the mantle, say $4. With the grading and return shipping would have about $95 all in.

Knowing these numbers, would you get it graded by SGC?

Is the $80. the lowest price from SGC for these Jumbo type submissions ? I was thinking sending a few such large Jumbo items to PSA - do you know how much PSA charges ? I can't seem to find their Jumbo pricing on their website. Thanks.

SGC charger $50 per on jumbo then shipping is $30 for up to 5 cards I think.
Not sure on PSA pricing

If your plan is to attempt to make some quick money on it, then I would probably not bother with getting it graded by SGC, unless you have high hopes that it will grade really high.

Your odds of making a quick buck are probably just as good or better if you just try to sell the set raw as it is.

PSA oversize $40

Unless you’re a deeply devoted SGC guy, the $40 vs $50 SGC charge plus the difference in resale value makes this quite an easy decision to go with PSA every time as long as you have the patience to “wait for it……”

+1

In addition, that's not a 1955. It is either a 1956 or 1957 Jay Publishing photo depending on the other photos in the set. I think it would be best to keep the set together.

While I love SGC for a lot of mainstream vintage......

As so well stated in the thread already - for these types of oddball issues and looking to sell - PSA is the only option. Regarding condition, Nicolo explained it really well - I would expect something in the 2-3 range. Identify your piece properly (per Mike's post), check historical sales in the 2-3 grade range and you will quickly determine whether it is worth sending in.

If the set is 12 cards, it’s a 1957 Jay Publishing Yankees set. The 1956 set is comprised of 25 cards and was made by Jay’s Publishing to commemorate the Yankees World Series team.
Picture of Mantle is same in both sets, and is the one you’ve pictured. I don’t believe that particular photo was used in creating any other Jay’s Publishing sets.

I posted this as a 1955 because of the ones on eBay and graded by PSA like this one.

bcookie 08-23-2024 10:23 AM

well, I sent it off to SGC and it is currently in the post grading stage so i probably wont know the grade until Monday. They do list the picture as:

1955-57 Team Issue Mickey Mantle

Good luck! Hopefully all of us armchair graders are wrong, and they come back with 8s and 9s and above.

Yeah, well you really can't trust PSA 100% of the time. Here's another PSA error:

Attachment 632183

This is most likely from the 1961 photo set identified by Trading Card Database as manufactured by Sports Service

They probably lazily copied what PSA has these listed as.

Good luck with the grade!

The grade popped, for what I have into it I am happy and will probably keep it for a while anyways

And the bigger pop of the submission

raulus 08-27-2024 03:51 PM

Glad to hear you’re happy with the grade. All part of the joys of collecting large oddball items. Often we want higher grades, but get to live with less because they can be so hard to find based on how tough the graders are on these pieces.
