Burbank card show 8/23 - 8/25

Is anybody attending? I'll be there at least Friday. Maybe Saturday but that depends on how much I get done Friday. I will be doing Disneyland with the family that weekend as well.

I'm assuming it will be largely modern. But hopefully a decent amount of vintage will be represented.

doug.goodman 08-08-2024 11:52 PM

Is this the Burbank card show in Burbank, or the one 90 minutes away in Anaheim?

ocjack 08-09-2024 08:50 AM

I only hope they solve the parking problem from their last show (to the degree they can). I went last time, spent 90 minutes circling the blocks trying to find a parking space and then gave up. It looked like their show was competing with several other events at the convention center that added to the mess.

I'd love to attend this next one.

The same thing happened to me. Go early if you decide to go.

DeanH3 08-09-2024 11:55 AM

The show is being held at the Anaheim convention center.

I tried. Arrived around 10:30 and lot was full.

I am supposed to be there but I am probably going to cancel. I messed up my ankle pretty badly and I am not sure I am physically capable of the move-in and move-out.

Will your ankle also prevent you (because flying cross country is hard when your ankle is mssed up) from flying to the East Coast for Fanatics Fest and the ECN?

Exhibitman 08-10-2024 07:32 PM

Nope. The stuff I tore affects my lateral movement. I am worried about my ability to move the 200#+ of stuff I bring as well as my ability to stand behind a table all day.

oldschool73 08-18-2024 06:36 PM

Vintage Dealers attending?

I looked on the website and their is a floor map but no list of dealers...anyone have any intel?

Dean, did you make it to the show?

ajjohnsonsoxfan 08-24-2024 11:42 AM

Walked the show yesterday. Got there around 11:15. Was a little surprised at the ratio of modern to vintage (although I guess I shouldn't have been). I'd say 85% modern with a TON of pokemon. Don't think I've ever seen so much pokemon at one show. I got spoiled at the National seeing sooo much vintage.

Getting old sucks! Healing takes a little longer... I'd bring a tall stool or chair so I wouldn't have to stand all day, but I guess I probably don't understand the dynamics of being a seller and probably having to be on your feet all day.

Someone said the Burbank card show is like a West Coast National. Any truth to that rumor? I'd have a difficult time believing that.

For hoopla and crowd turnout, yup but the amount of vintage there is extremely limited, like most CA shows. Maybe most shows in general but I do not get to shows in other states. I made the mistake of driving out to both their Anaheim and Ontario shows and will NEVER do it again. Better prices and better selection in almost any online auction.

You're surprised ? Most of the local (& even regional shows) these days is the shiny stuff.

Hey Jim,

I did not make it. My mom had to go into the Hospital, so I had to take a rain check. She'd doing well so I'm grateful. There will always be another show.

I guess I was still under the spell of the National where vintage was overflowing like the melty cheese on a great NY slice

oldschool73 08-24-2024 04:07 PM

Burbank show was a waste of time for Vintage

As others have said...maybe 15% vintage..AND...could easily get better prices even with shipping, tax, auction fees. Quite disappointing from a vintage perspective. Only reasonable dealer was Ash...who, for the hour I was at his table, 3 other dealers came and bought to resell same day (Friday).

Exhibitman 08-24-2024 04:52 PM

That's why I do really well at Anaheim: lots of demand for vintage stuff. Of course since i am getting to be vintage stuff myself, I have to moderate my approach. I will be at Pasadena in two weeks; that's an easy show from a logistical perspective.

Tere1071 08-24-2024 05:53 PM

I was there yesterday from just after 12:00 noon to 5:00 P.M. My perspective is from someone who's collecting 1967, 1968, and 1969 Topps Baseball in lower condition.

My goal was to fill in both sets with stars and a few commons. From what I could find, I was able to obtain some missing commons and a 67 Mays in good condition with nice eye appeal for reasonable prices. I was also able to upgrade commons, particularly for 1968.

There weren't too many ungraded cards that met my criteria- condition and budget. Several dealers maintained prices that went well-above eBay, i.e. 69 high number commons in ex-mint condition at $10-$12 each; 69 Earl Weaver in VG-EX condition at $30; an off-center 68 LaRussa also at $30 and finally a 69 Tug McGraw in VG-EX at $20. I can live with the ones that are already in my collection for the time being.

There was some vintage, mostly slabbed, at fairly stiff prices. I almost decided to upgrade a few of my 71 Topps with slabbed cards rated at 6, but I didn't see anything that was that much better than what I already had raw and purchased for a lot less money, so have some working funds for the Pasadena show in two weeks.

Visually, there were some very nice items to behold. One dealer had an array of Jackie Robinson material that stood out and pleasant to view. My friend who accompanied me was awed and spooked by a Sharon Tate autographed on a piece of paper, while I saw the Beatles infamous "butcher cover" upclose for the first time.

Most of the tables were manned by dealers with slabs in all sports and fantasy-type cards. It reminded me of a typical local show at Frank & Sons which occurs three times a week monthly. I don't see the appeal and many of those collectors don't get older sports cards and I don't think that'll ever change.

Happy collecting!

1968 Topps Baseball 582/598

That guy has his Jackie Robinson museum at every show.

I ended up with this Robinson from another dealer at a really good price a little trade and cash. Probably not the nicest Signature, not the best job of slabbing by the idiots at Beckett. It does have the ever present "Pinhole" AND LOW POPSICLE which I have come to appreciate. All those contribute to it being sloppy 3rds and making it through the National. I passed on a few other cards I can find everyday and snatched this while it was there cause I liked the dealer and wanted to build some repore,:)

Got beat up on a couple of other nice cards, including 1 from Ash that he's had a year or better.

Pretty much everything there you always see at these local shows. The few other dealers I know were most definitely buying from Ash too. He must give them better deals than he does me, :D:D:D

That said, I really enjoyed the show. Got there @ 9:00AM, great on site parking. waited in the lobby after checking in and they started to let us in @9:45A. AC working great, beautiful bathrooms everywhere and internet working perfectly.
I'll be back for a quick look around in February.

Confucius say: "He who is always looking at the ground sees nothing but dirt." OMG, that frigging photo is GORGEOUS! Anybody who isn't happy having that in their collection needs to find another hobby. I don't mean you--you sprung for it despite the perceived imperfections, so it must do something for you, but my God, what a beauty!

Burbank

Definitely less sports card dealers than last year's show. Vintage was less too. Most of the vintage was way overpriced. Like 20 to 40 percent above VCP. So I didn't even bother. There were dealers that were there last year from back east that didn't come back. Honestly, it could have easily been called the Burbank Pokémon Show.

I agree. In the past they've had most of the Pokemon stuff in a separate room/floor, but all of the dealers were mixed together this time. And I felt the same re vintage. There wasn't as much vintage, and it was way too expensive. I had money burning a hole in my pocket, but I just couldn't do it at those prices

I've enjoyed their other shows, so I'll still go to the next one in Ontario and hope for the best!

I do love it, Thanks.:D I always liked Jackie and even when I collected autographs, I never could find the right one. Certainly wasn't looking for anything like this but nothing else really inspired me at the show for the prices.

When a dealer shot down an even trade (2 gorgeous red man May/Williams with tabs) for a sliced off 59 bazooka Mays, I found these great dealers and table willing to trade and make an easy cash/trade deal. Also, now they have a new customer....The other guy, not so much. AND I have really started to enjoy cards with pin holes these days, that was a bonus!
