Tuesday Trivia: MVPs at multiple positions
Shohei Ohtani is the only player to have won an MVP while playing two primary positions in the same year—DH and pitcher.
But four other players have won MVP awards while playing different primary positions in those seasons. Name these four players. (As always, please do not look up the answer, but rather guess the answer) |
Mantle CF and RF?
|
Cal Ripken?
|
Mantle and Ripken are great guesses, but they both won their MVPs at their main primary positions.
Mantle won MVPs in '56 and '57 when he exclusively played CF, and in '62 when he played 94 of 117 games in CF. He played LF in 107 of 108 games in '64 and 1B to round out his career in '67 and '68. Ripken played SS exclusively in '83 and '91 when he won his MVPs. It wasn't until '97 that his primary position became a 3B. |
Hank Greenberg I think won at first base and also left field.
|
Alex Rodriguez at short and third.
|
Robin Yount at short and center.

Looks like you also were the first to guess ARod in addition to your Greenberg guess. So the 4 players are Greenberg, Musial, Yount and ARod. Well done everyone! |
