Tuesday Trivia: MVPs at multiple positions

Shohei Ohtani is the only player to have won an MVP while playing two primary positions in the same year—DH and pitcher.

But four other players have won MVP awards while playing different primary positions in those seasons. Name these four players.

(As always, please do not look up the answer, but rather guess the answer)

Mantle CF and RF?

Cliff Bowman 07-30-2024 08:02 AM

Cal Ripken?

Mantle and Ripken are great guesses, but they both won their MVPs at their main primary positions.

Mantle won MVPs in '56 and '57 when he exclusively played CF, and in '62 when he played 94 of 117 games in CF. He played LF in 107 of 108 games in '64 and 1B to round out his career in '67 and '68.

Ripken played SS exclusively in '83 and '91 when he won his MVPs. It wasn't until '97 that his primary position became a 3B.

Hank Greenberg I think won at first base and also left field.

jayshum 07-30-2024 08:50 AM

Alex Rodriguez at short and third.

jayshum 07-30-2024 08:53 AM

Robin Yount at short and center.

Correct! Hank Greenberg was converted to a leftfielder in 1940 to make room for Rudy York at 1st Base, and promptly took home the MVP, not long before enlisting in the War.

3 more to go.

Alex Rodriquez
SS in Texas
3B in NY thanks to Jeter

Stan Musial
Outfield the first time
Then 1B

Frank, both ARod and Stan Musial are correct, just as you have stated!

Great guess, but both of Bryce Harper's MVPs ('15 and '21) were when he was a Right Fielder. Of, course if he wins another MVP at 1B, that will change.

One more (that I know of) to go!

You missed my Robin Yount guess in an earlier post. Correct?

Oh sorry, yes, Robin Yount for Shortstop in 1982 and CF in 1989.

Looks like you also were the first to guess ARod in addition to your Greenberg guess.

So the 4 players are Greenberg, Musial, Yount and ARod.

Well done everyone!
