What is the best book written about Lou Gehrig ?

"Luckiest Man" by Jonathan Eig. It's about 18 years old, but the best I've ever read.

Thanks for posting and I will have to read this one! I love Pride of the Yankees from the 40's. It's a simple good read, but that was the first one I read as a kid and still have it (first edition, printed on lower quality paper due to WW2).

As you can guess, there's really nothing in that Eig bio that will cause you to like Lou any less. Perhaps the most unassuming, decent superstar the game has ever produced. I guess we can put Brooks Robinson up there, too, but I think of them differently, as Brooks was so outgoing.

I recommend three:
Pride Of The Yankees - Paul Gallico Lou Gehrig, A Quiet Hero - Frank Graham Lou Gehrig, The Lost Memoir - Alan Gaff They are each very good, in my humble opinion. You can see my somewhat embellished copies here. I prefer books written by people who knew their subject personally as opposed to some later author's subjective interpretation, thus the first two. The Lost Memoir is newer, but while it does have a bio, it's main focus is a series of syndicated newspaper articles written by Lou Gehrig himself during the 1927 season. |
