Wow, that's a lot of one-hitters in a single season, albeit Cease hadn't gotten passed the 7th inning until yesterday.

I looked up who had the most one-hitters in a single season, and apparently Dave Stieb had 3 one-hitters (full 9 innings) in 1988.
https://www.baseball-almanac.com/rec..._records.shtml. Stieb finally got a no-hitter in 1990--the only one in Blue Jays franchise history.

Cease's no-hitter was just the 2nd in the Padres' 53 years.

Stieb had consecutive games where he was ONE STRIKE away from a no-hitter!

On Sep 24, 1988 in Cleveland, he had a no-hitter with 2 outs in the ninth, and a 2-2 count on Julio Franco, when Franco singled. Stieb got the next batter to fly out to end the game.

Six days later on Sep 30 at home against the Orioles, he did the exact same thing. He had a no-hitter with 2 outs in the ninth and a 2-2 count on Jim Traber, when Traber got a single. Stieb got the next batter to ground out to end the game.
