Sharing My Cobb Project + Need Some Help

Two parts to my post, one to share my Ty Cobb project that I have been working on and one to maybe get some help from Net54 completing it...

Over the past couple of years, I have been able to acquire a T206 Red Portrait Ty Cobb, a Green Portrait and a signed check.

https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...794bdbb0_z.jpg

The Red portrait was a pre-pandemic pick up.

The Green portrait was acquired via trade with board member "frankrizzo29".

The check was an eBay purchase, had to get one with the green ink.
I've seen other checks made out to Claire Rose before, so I'm thinking she was family or maybe like a maid or something...

So, now to the second part of my post, the "help" part...

I have decided that I want to expand this project by trading for and/or purchasing a Bat On Shoulder Cobb and Bat Off Shoulder Cobb.

(I had a nice Bat On Shoulder, but traded it to Frank as part of the deal for the Green Portrait.)

I am looking for examples graded 1-3, preferably in new SGC holders, but will look at any and all if the price is right.

Backs do not matter to me, the more common the better.

I will be at this year's National in Cleveland on Wednesday and Thursday.

If you have either and would like to work out a deal, please let me know.
I have mostly modern to trade but will have some cash handy too.

Feel free to DM me through Net54 and I can supply you with my cell if you'll be there one of those days.

Thanks in advance!!!

Very cool, thanks for sharing.

If you're open to suggestions...from a visual display standpoint, and if you get the other two T206 poses...I'd say lose the B&W photo and have the check centered, and put 2 cards above it, and 2 cards below it. Just my 2 cents.

Love the project, good luck!

Very cool display. I kinda like the portrait in the center. It's a great image of Ty for the display and the cards alone are too small to highlight the man. I'd put two cards on the sides and the check below the portrait for my display. Sorry to disagree with you Michael. ;)

This looks great! I'd like to do something similar. Are you willing to share more about this frame job? Where did you have it done? Price range? Are you able to take the item in and out of the frame when wanted? How are the cases secured within the frame?

Thanks!
Jeff

I appreciate the feedback and ideas from everyone so far, thank you!!!

I had a "professional framer" do it, I'll be honest, I wasn't thrilled with the final outcome (spacing mostly), but I just wanted my stuff back at that point.

It ended up costing me around $300, with most of the money being in the glass and frame. The glass is 'museum quality", so you don't have to worry about any fading of colors ink...

So there's another cutout behind the gray cutout which helps hold everything in place. I can take that off and grab the individual pieces if I need to.

My plan, once I have the last two cards, is to re-use the frame and the glass, but re-do everything else, so the spacing is better and my OCD doesn't bother me as much :D:D:D

I'll probably stick to the picture in the middle, two cards on each side and then the check underneath...

The glass probably has a coating on it that is supposed to protect against harmful UV rays, but it can't protect your collectibles like the way you think it can. I once read this long article explaining how certain wavelengths can still come through the glass ... blah, blah, blah ...

So, you still gotta' be careful where you hang this thing up. You don't want it near a big window or in a room with strong lighting.

It's in my basement with canned lighting, nothing too close :)

Well, I've been to double digit Nationals and I was still shocked at how over priced a lot of stuff was today...

$5200 for a PSA 1.5 On Shoulder was probably my personal favorite, I asked him again if he said 5 2 0 0 and he said "yeah, it's a 1.5, but it has great eye appeal"..... Okey dokey... What's the point in grading then...

Not sure I'll be coming home with another Cobb, but I still have maybe 30% of the show to check out tomorrow (Thursday)...

I know this is a card forum, but I recommend an original Cobb photo or ephemera type item. I prefer to own something one of a kind (or close to it) than something as common as a T206 Cobb. I think you can get a cool Cobb photo for less than a card from the same era (and sometimes significantly less).
I have attached some Cobb photos from my collection (not for sale). I did not pay much for any of these (less than 100 for two of them and around 200 for the three snapshots together from 1918). I bought them in the last 10-15 years. Good luck with the hunt!

I have this one if you don't find what you're looking for at National. I prefer to trade for other wants, and my main targets are 47 Bond Jackie, Colgan Cobb, 41 Play Ball Williams, Cracker Jack Speaker and Hooper.

I was able to pick up a very nice SGC 1 Cobb Off Shoulder today.

The only one I will not be going home with is the On Shoulder, so the search continues...

jmarascojr 07-27-2024 08:46 AM

Now that I'm back home, thought I would share a picture of the Cobb Off Shoulder I picked up at The National.

There's a small crease about halfway through the card which is only noticeable when you you tilt it a certain way and some paper loss on the back.
But being that it's gonna be going into the frame, nobody is going to see the back anyway :)

Still need an "on shoulder" if anybody has one....
