Off-Centered PSA Encapsulation

1 Attachment(s)
This is a non-sports item, but wondered if any of you have gotten ecapsulations from PSA that were WAY off-centered/crooked like the one I just got in the mail. If so, any success in resubmitting for a redo that doesn't look like s--t?

I dropped them an email -- we'll see what they say.

Good luck. I think no chance they reholder it. I have seen many like this. If the item does not fit nicely into a size they have in stock, this is what they do on a somewhat regular basis.

Well that's disappointing -- that someone could look at the result and say, "Yep, the customer's gonna love this" ... or that they just don't care. I'd rather just have the sticker and frame it myself.

Frist, they don't have holders for all sizes. Not sure if the one they used was the closest or not. They sometimes run out of a size and use whatever is closest.

I saw a 1952 Star Cal Mickey Mantle which is a $10K card that they have a holder that perfectly displays it that was much worse than the one you have.

I think it can be shifted if you lightly bump it against a solid but slightly cushioned surface. Tap, tap, tap until it gets aligned how you want it. I suppose it's possible it's pressed in so tight it won't move, but I bet it would.

Very annoying but I know they don't have the right sizes for literally every piece of memorabilia ever made. So I just bang the slab around until it's right lol.

Yeah I hoped it would shift a bit, but I've been pretty forceful, and I can't get the thing to budge a millimeter.

Oh, that stinks. Do you have a rubber mallet to bang it with, have you been that forceful? Good luck in getting improvement somehow, I can understand how unsatisfactory that is.

Oh, one thing you could try is to get a couple little suction cups and put them on the middle of the slab, front and back, and gently pull to relieve some pressure that’s on the item and see if it shifts then.

Boy I LOVED the ingenuity on this one ... but all I did was break the little suction cup handles when pulling from both sides -- lol. Maybe there's a bigger cup that'll do the job.

I would take a red marker and color in the areas of the holder until it looks square. Thank me later.

perezfan 07-10-2024 10:45 PM

Unfortunately (and believe it or not) this is par for the course for them... I'd break it out, rather than constantly being reminded of PSA's ineptitude every time I looked at it.

They even do this off-center and tilting placement with 1950 Bowman Cards. I avoid them completely.

Yeah I’ll probably wait until they’re at a nearby show in November, have them do the work, and just sticker it. I know it’s an odd fit, but damn, an 80/20 center job is ridiculous.

Off-Centered PSA Encapsulation (UPDATE)

So apparently this job was bad enough to justify a redo on their part. Hopefully second time is the charm ...

perezfan 07-19-2024 06:43 PM

I wonder if this means they will fix the tens of thousands of off-centered and tilting cards they've sloppily slabbed as well? All this time, I've been cracking them out and putting them in One-Touch Holders.

Oh well... they look far better without the bar-codes anyway.

etsmith 07-26-2024 08:02 PM

It looks like it's a signed bookplate, so I wouldn't see anything wrong with trimming down the backing paper to a more uniform size.

So after PSA allowed me to return the original encapsulation for a replacement, today it came back perfectly done in a holder with the exact book page dimensions. I can only assume they had this size before but it was either out of stock or the employee just didn't use it.

Anyway, all's well that ends well. Next time they screw up something of yours, don't let them off the hook.

If you look at the old vs the new, they have actually subtley redesigned their holders. They now use a plastic inner sleeve (made of two sheets of thin, flexible plastic) that they crimp (not sure that's the right word) around the item itself, so that items now remain centered. The items used to be loose within the larger, rigid holder.

I certainly applaud the evolution.

Now the only question that remains....

What will PSA do to fix the thousands of "these" that are out there?
