baseball trivia/ guessing game

anybody playing this internet game called" immaculate grid "

Quite fun, and being a card collector does help

Its a grid of 9 boxes with clues on the ends- stuff like name a player who played for SF and Balt, name a Pirate 2nd baseman who batted etc, etc., harder then one would think

Immaculate grid. Powered by baseball reference

There was a thread about it in the Watercooler section last year.

Play it every day.

trivia

Like some people wake up every morning and play Word-del ,
I play a new game of this every day

The challenging part is to not answer with a popular answer - for ex-

a player who played at least one game at SS...and had 3000 hits - popular answer( and a correct answer) - Jeter..... but Willie Mays once played SS..and of course had 3000 hits

The " rarer" the correct answer. The more points you get

I play the grid everyday! Whenever I am clueless I try Octavio Dotel or Edwin Jackson … they played for a lot of teams …. Rickey Henderson too

Collecting cards surely helps !

Mike Morgan is a go-to for me.

If there's a D'Back or Ray connection needed - sometimes even a Marlin or Rockie - my chances for winning go way down. Sometimes I'm surprised how little I know/remember about clubs that have been here for more than a quarter century!

I agree with the earlier commenter about trying for the most obscure - I took a stab once that Roger Bresnahan pitched in a game once, and lo and behold he had!

Morgan is good for D-backs, Mariners & Blue Jays. Todd Zeile is good for Rockies & Marlins. I use Al Simmons, Waite Hoyt, Heinie Manish and Hoyt Wilhelm a lot too.

I am like you, I do well with the original 16 teams and the newer the teams, the higher my score goes.

New personal best today - Rarity Score of 2!

And it goes without saying - just from memory.

There were no questions related to the 1993 and later expansion clubs, or awards or anything like that.

I knew collecting cards would pay off one day....

game

two ?,
that is unheard of !

I had something in the teens once

but yes, when stumped, started thinking of the ball cards with Willie Horton on Sea., or Duke Snider on SF..it helps

deweyinthehall 07-10-2024 04:34 PM

My answers today were, from left to right:
Top
Dave Heaverlo/Wayne Twitchell/Skip Jutze
Middle
Willie Montanez/Craig Skok/Bob Didier
Bottom
Don Carrithers/Gerry Pirtle/Bob Reece

Like I said, as long as there's nothing about modern teams, awards or other things like that, I generally do really well.

That is really obscure. My score was 22, but 6 of my picks were less than 1%. I scored my best score, a 2, with this grid.

I use Todd Zeile and Al Simmons all the time too. I also use Chad Qualls, as he played for all of 4 of the recent expansion teams.

A lot of the players I use are players that played for all the teams that have a single color--like Jesse Chavez for blue teams, or Fernando Rodney for green teams.

Players that played every position like King Kelly or Bert Campaneris also come in handy.

It seems like people in general don't know a lot of the Negro League players, so I tend to do pretty well with those. Got my lowest score of 1 with some Negro League players in grid 396.

Lowest single answer/square score

So I was wondering what the lowest single answer/square score people have seen is.

For grid #103, there is a square on the bottom right for Hall of Fame and /300 Avg. season. If you answer a really obscure player, like John Clarkson or Clark Griffith you can get a score of .0004%, which works out to 1/250,000 which is how many people completed grid #103.

Of course if someone else were to choose John Clarkson or Clark Griffith, the score would theoretically double.

Has anyone seen a lower score than .0004%?

I cant believe anyone could go lower that that !!

I feel a score in the 20"s is quite respectable

Yours rates the lowest score I've seen and thanks for motivation to visit the Clarkson clan today! (John, Dad, Walter) -- plus Tim Keefe's close by. :-)

Wow, two hall of fame pitchers close by. Where are you in these pics?

They're buried in Cambridge Cemetery in Cambridge, MA. While B-R shows several more players buried there, FindAGrave.com lacks marker locations for some, so I'm seeking city help on the others. (Four more players rest in nearby Mt. Auburn Cemetery.)

Sort by the Cemetery column and scroll down to see everyone at each location: https://www.baseball-reference.com/bio/MA_buried.shtml

Wow, that is a very interesting feature of Baseball Reference. I went down a rabbit hole looking at where people are from and where they are buried.

Surprisingly, there is only one HOF player buried in the state of Virginia (I live in VA). Jud Wilson of the Negro Leagues is buried in Arlington Cemetery. I will have to check it out.

I wonder how many other cemeteries have multiple HOFers like the one in Cambridge?
