Deans Ton of OJ's

Deans Cards has just listed on Ebay scores of OJ's. But, as usual, his opening bids are off the chart. Interesting to see how they do.

BioCRN 06-11-2024 02:36 PM

Never been happier to not see one I'm looking for.

Everything I've ever purchased from Dean's has been exactly as pictured and described, but it's not the place to look for deals even if you can occasionally luck into some deals.

More eBay museum pricing.

I have no knowledge of this issue, but looks like somebody is leaving the hobby...

OJs

Few (if any) of these are new listings. Many were picked up on EBay or other auctions over the past couple of years and simply listed at (much) higher prices. Occasionally, one will sell.

Am I the only one?

Am I the only dunce who thought this was a thread about OJ Simpson cards making a comeback??? Dohhhhhhh!

Lobo Aullando 06-11-2024 04:11 PM

If I'm putting two and two together, are we saying it's possible they've been trying to pull some sort of Hunt brothers routine? I've noticed the floor on "good-enough" condition cards has gone from ~$225 to $~375.

Here we are waiting for the gates to open as all of the usual "Dean-noser" apologists once again come flooding in to inundate the thread with their claims of how freaking awesome and marvelous Dean-o is!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Viva 3500% mark-ups of reasonable prices!!!!!!!! :mad::eek::mad:

Lots of hate for Deans around here. But sometimes you can find some pretty nice cards at good prices (if you know how to grade). I bought a dead centered 1960 Topps Mantle from him a few months ago that was listed on ebay as a raw EX+ copy for $1550. Most people here would look up "comps" for that and blast his pricing (an average PSA 5 sells for about $760). But I thought it looked better than a 5. I bought it on his website and got it for $1240 (20% off). After it arrived, I was able to verify that it was indeed at least an EXMT+ copy and I knew I could get at least a PSA 6 and possibly even an SGC 7. So I shipped it off to PSA and they hammered it. Gave it a PSA 5. They hammered over half of my submission, many cards were even 2 full grades low. So I cracked it out and sent it back. They gave it a 6.5. Now I could easily sell it for $2500+. Although I'm not looking to sell it.

You just have to know what you're looking at sometimes. I've bought several cards from Deans over the years. I'm happy with all of them.

People get mad at me every day on ebay because they think my prices are too high. But I never have a problem finding buyers. Dean understands the value of eye appeal. Most buyers don't. I'm only interested in selling to people who appreciate and value eye appeal. Sometimes his prices are absurd for some reason, but not always. There are plenty of cards worth buying IMO.

"Eye appeal" just another way to overcharge. Eye appeal varies from seller to seller. Sellers use those two words so much that they have no meaning. The BUYER is the one that should determine if it has "eye appeal".

Spoken like someone whose entire collection is wildly off-center. Nothing wrong with that. Collect what you love. I collect centered cards. Fortunately for me, centering is not subjective. It is measurable.

If you think Dean's prices are high on OJ's you should ask Jay Miller what he wants for some of his...at least Dean's offers free shipping when you spend $10k with him :)

Fred 06-11-2024 11:44 PM

Lots of common OJs at really high prices. Most of the cards are going to be in their inventory for a long time and clog up the OJ searches. I suppose one could just filter Deans out of the search.

It'd be nice to see some hard to find OJs on ebay, but that doesn't occur very often. Gotta check the auction houses for the tougher ones.

I heard they're not making any more of them either.

No hate from me.
Like you, I have zero problem paying up for excellent eye appeal, especially on OJ's; I just don't feel like the majority of his OJ's have the eye appeal to justify the price. But with almost 57k feedback he's obviously selling cards and I'm sure could care less what my opinion is. :)

I didn't realize Dean's listed cards on eBay as auctions. I thought they only had BINs. It looks like they currently have 237 listings for auctions (all OJs) and 440,000+ listings as BINs so I guess the auctions are a rarity for them. Does anyone know if they have listed many (any?) cards in auctions before these?

Huge markups with prices or wanting insane wins on trades are horrible.

I personally have had great experiences buying from Dean's.:)

jayshum 06-12-2024 03:01 PM

I got an email from Dean's with the following information in it so that explains the auctions:

Due to the level of interest we decided to auction our entire Old Judge graded inventory in addition to the 73 newly graded cards featured in yesterday's newsletter.

insidethewrapper 06-13-2024 09:19 PM

I noticed some of the opening bids have come down since they had no bids.
